Phins Continue to Reward Their Own

Sanders has more than earned his shiny new contract

Dolphins GM Chris Grier and Head Coach Brian Flores head into their third offseason together by starting this offseason on the right foot. Again, this front office has rewarded their own by locking in star kicker Jason Sanders to a 5 year $22 million extension that includes $10 in guarantees, making him one of the top paid kickers in the league. Any move other than this would have been foolish. Keeping Sanders was a no-brainer for sure! But, past regimes turned ‘no-brainers’ into astrophysics on a routine basis… so, it was good to see this smart move in the books.

Instead of chasing Free Agents, Phins are finding and keeping their own

This regime continues to put the right foot forward with extensions to their own players that they’ve marked as ‘their type of guys’ due to performance and character. The interesting part is how they crave character that boosts their locker room as much as talent. ‘Building the culture’ in Miami hasn’t been seen since Shula. It’s a fine change of pace to see Phins players who perform well get rewarded’. This sets a great example for the rest of the young players on the team.

Most of the bookmaker software providers or pay per head for dummies, would agree that Sanders has earned this contract because he put up one of the top performances by a kicker in 2020.

Sanders finished the season last year making 36 out of 39 field goals for a 92.3% rate! This was the best season of his career during a year where he tried more field goals than any other season. Sanders also was a perfect 36 out of 36 on extra points with two game-winning field goals, one against the Cardinals and another against the Raiders. Tied for 1st in the league in field goal percentage and also in points with 144, Sanders was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2020.

Finding gems deep in the draft has been a hallmark of the Phins

A former 7th round pick, the Dolphins rewarded Sanders because he was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2021 season.  Having a dependable kicker is always a great thing, and hopefully, Sanders doesn’t take his ‘foot off the pedal’… and continues to get better.

This continues the pleasant trend of Miami of rewarding players and locking them up before their contract expires. Giving the other players the motivation to work hard and perform with a chance to get the respect of being compensated accordingly is a great carrot in front of the horse.

Over the course of the next months, Miami will need to make some other decisions in-house (if they haven’t made up their minds already) on their own upcoming free agents. This list includes names such as Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Breida, Ted Karras, Vince Biegel, Matt Haack, Elandon Roberts, Isaiah Ford, Mack, Hollins, Davon Godchaux, and Nik Needham… to name a few. Unfortunately, the biggest name on the list is Fitzpatrick, who will be off to his 9th team. He wants a chance to start and is still good enough to earn the spot. But, everyone else on the list the Phins front office will have to think long and hard about the direction with them. You can bet but you can bet won’t be resigned.

Which of these players on this shortlist would the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans want to bring back for next season?
