Phins Draft: Edge Player In RD 1?

An edge player may be Miami’s best value in the 1st Round of the draft

Day one of the draft could bring an edge rusher to Miami

With the NFL Draft around the corner on April 25th, predictions for who Miami will draft in Round 1 are all over the place.

Phins going with a quarterback is flashy…

… But, the reality is Miami has so many holes to fill and the top two QB’s will be long gone before they can use the 13th pick.

With Murray and Haskins out of reach, Miami would have to absolutely love one of them and pay a fortune to move up. Really, neither are options.

Phinsnews has covered the possibilities in the 1st Round at offensive line and at the interior defensive line.

M.J. sees Grier picking a player on the inside of the D-line. He’s close…

… but I see it a bit differently.

Rumor is Adam Gase leaked Ross’ desire for Tua Tagovailoa in 2020…

… this began an avalanche of speculation.

True or not we don’t know.

But, this ‘info’, Brian Flores being a defensive coach, the departure of Cameron Wake and Robert Quinn, and a draft heavily loaded with prime pass rushing talent, leads me to believe defensive edge will be the pick in the 1st Round.

Flores is coming off an epic coaching performance in the Super Bowl and understands first hand that defense wins championships. The Pats ‘D’ canceled a potent Rams offense limiting them to a measly 10 points. Expect this formula to be the foundation going forward.

In addition, Flores has been with the Patriots since 2004…

… so he’s well aware that the best way to beat Tom Brady is with an old-fashioned pass rush.

Considering the Dolphins are extremely thin at the DE position AND what they have their lacks experience, Flores might want to start his career with a big injection of talent on the edge.

The top DE in this draft is Nick Bosa of Ohio State, but unfortunately, he’s a certified Top 5 pick. Bosa will be long gone by the time the Dolphins get their chance to make a selection. The same can be said of the #2 edge player, Rashan Gary from Michigan… unless you believe PFF.

But we’ll consider them both gone for the sake of this article.

Montez Sweat from Mississippi State and Clelin Ferrell from Clemson are two excellent edge players that will be in Miami’s range. Ferrell will be there for ‘certain’… some mocks predict Sweat to go slightly earlier. The Lions have been the spot ‘pegged’ for him.

I think he’ll fall out of the Top 10.

In addition, it’s even possible that Miami could trade back a tad and still draft Ferrell… and maybe Sweat too if things break just right.

Montez Sweat:

Sweat set the combine defensive lineman record by running a 4.41-second 40-yard dash. Let me add an exclamation to this: Sweat is 6’6” 260 lbs!

The knocks on Sweat are: He was kicked out of Michigan State for violating team rules and has a “low-risk”  heart condition. Pay per head bookie services like www.AcePerHead.com, predict the ‘heart issue’ will cause Sweat to slide a few spots.

However, there is no questioning his ability with his 53 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and 11.5 sacks last season. His outstanding performance at the Senior Bowl, which allowed him to showcase his speed, length, and speed to get the better of the opposing offensive lineman, proves he can perform against the best.

Clelin Ferrell:

Ferrell is not as tall or fast as Sweat. At 6’4” 264 lbs, he ran a 4.77 second 40 yard dash time. Despite ‘okay’ speed, he was a big part of the Clemson Tigers 2019 Championship team and was very productive with 55 tackles, 19.5 tackles for a loss, and 11.5 sacks.

In addition, the Dolphins newly hired Defensive Line coach, Marion Hobby, was the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive End Coach for Clemson from 2011 to 2016. He coached Ferrell in 2015 and 2016.

This relationship could tip the scales in his favor.

Ferrell racked up 27 sacks in his 4 years at Clemson and that was with him only playing 1 game in his first season. That’s a load of production that could be had after a trade back.

Sweat and Ferrell could help fill the void created with Wake’s departure

Either of these two D-Ends would be an immediate starter on a dangerously thin squad. The only way to find the next Jason Taylor or Cameron Wake is to draft DEs and draft some more. Truth is we might not see the likes of Taylor or Wake in Miami for a long time… but we need real production from the position to have success in the NFL now. So let’s start the process in Round 1 of the 2019 Draft!

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans thoughts about the Dolphins selecting a DE in the first round?

    Nice Article Admin once again.

Hey the film below Chris Simms gives a very nice analogy of who he thinks the top 7 Edge Rushers are in this 2019 draft. I really like Jaylon Ferguson may be the best edge rusher that no one has heard of? https://youtu.be/w_1KNOliPLEtrading back late 1st rounder or second rounder. He had some trouble off field not sure what is was.

    https://youtu.be/3d0tq-pwHjQ

The trouble he was in is listed below:

We disagree with the NFL’s position with regards to Jaylon Ferguson,” the statement said, via Josina Anderson of ESPN. “Jaylon is a great person who made a mistake 4 years ago before he started playing college football. He was involved in a scuffle that resulted in him being charged with misdemeanor simple batter. He received a deferred judgment and $189.00 fine, a proper punishment for a fight between two teenagers. Since that day Jaylon has been a fine and upstanding student athlete that personifies the things we are trying to teach our young people today.”

Thanks, I do disagree with Jimmy on this one. I don’t see an LB or edge in the 1st Rd… I’m really hoping for the trade back though… really. If they do, OL and DL talent will be the best value then… Jaylon Ferguson had a poor performance. Phins like him though… he’s probably a 2nd or 3rd rounder at this point. Don’t think his mistakes matter at this point…
