Phins Draft: Mid-Round Quarterback Options

Miami said they could take a QB this year and next… but they didn’t say in what round

Dolphins Draft: Mid-round QB options offer good value

Many are predicting the Miami Dolphins Draft will include a quarterback before ‘all is said and done’.

Whether this ends up the case or what round they pick a quarterback is anyone’s guess.

However, most Phins fans hope that Miami won’t overdraft one in the first round. Missing by not picking is far more bearable than missing because of drafting a player.

As we have said before at ad nauseam, the top two prospects Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins won’t be available barring a trade up. Miami doesn’t have the draft assets and picks too late in the first round to select either of these players.

Unless there’s a miracle fall, the Dolphins will look to the mid-rounds to find their rookie QB.

The next tier of quarterbacks is Drew Lock and Daniel Jones. The pay per head services like www.AcePerHead.com bet there’s a strong chance one or both could fall to Miami in the 1st Round. Miami has shown interest in both players and they are both projected to go somewhere in the first round. However, the million dollar question is whether Miami values either of these two young QBs enough to spend their 1st Round pick them.

My gut tells me Miami will go with a Defensive player with their first pick and select a mid-round QB prospect this year.

With all this ‘blah-blah’ said:

The 3rd tier of QBs offers two players that Miami may well select in the 2nd through 4th Round of the draft: Ryan Finley from NC State and Will Grier from West Virginia.

Both players are unpolished prospects and have limited arm strength…

… but both could be worth a shot for a QB hungry team such as the Dolphins.

The Dolphins need to select a QB this draft even if they have their eyes and hearts set on the 2020 draft. Competition encourages performance and two young gunslingers is better than one.

Can we not repeat the same mistakes of the Ryan Tannehill era?

Finley is rated slightly higher than Grier. Most analysts believe he will be selected in either the 2nd or 3rd Round. Finley had a solid 2018 season at NC State and helped them become a ranked team while throwing for 3,928 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 67% completion percentage.

However, the questions are can he make every throw required in the NFL? Some feel he’s a less athletic version of Alex Smith. Getting ‘A’ex Smith lite’ at mid-round value doesn’t sound bad to me.

Strong Opinion Sports gives a thorough evaluation of Finley
Grier has fallen in mock drafts… but many say he has risen in the eyes of scouts

Phinsnews has liked Grier for a while. He is rated slightly behind Finley and most draft pundits predict him going in the 3rd or 4th round. He had the exact completion percentage of 67% and almost the same amount of passing yards with 3,864. Grier had a much better touchdown to interception ratio with his 37 touchdown passes to only 8 interceptions.

The biggest knock on Grier during the draft process has been his arm strength and his difficulty driving the ball when he sets his feet.

As a current college QB, Strong Opinion Sports adds an educated silver lining to Grier.
Quality quarterbacks are always an asset in a trade or on the field

Finley and Grier appear to have a similar value. A decision between these two players will come down to intangibles, such as intelligence and leadership.

If either ends up getting drafted by Miami, they will be a project. But for a team in desperate need of a young QB, this would be a strong step in the right direction.

You can’t get a young franchise QB without taking a chance and drafting one. Phins fans have been begging for Miami to draft a QB, even in the mid-rounds, for years. Let’s hope we don’t have to repeat ourselves again next year.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about these two QB prospects?
