Phins Hire Bobby Slowik as OC!

When the Miami Dolphins hired Bobby Slowik as their offensive coordinator, the move represented more than a routine staff change. It marked a philosophical shift toward structure in an approach rooted in the West Coast Offensive system that GM Jon-Eric Sullivan and HC Jeff Haley have been marinated in.

Slowik knows the Phins roster and has two years of experience as the OC of Texans, so it makes sense even if it isn’t a flashy hire.

Time will tell if it was wise and practical.

Slowik Takes Over for McDaniel

Slowik arrived from the Houston Texans, where he had served as offensive coordinator after rising through the coaching ranks in the San Francisco 49ers organization under Kyle Shanahan. That lineage showed clearly in his offensive identity. Slowik’s scheme emphasized outside-zone runs, play-action, and timing-based passing concepts designed to stretch defenses horizontally before attacking space behind them.

During his tenure in Houston, Slowik’s run game leaned heavily toward outside-zone concepts rather than interior power football with a heavy leaning of play action, rollouts, and flooding zones. Typical West Coast offense.

There will be overlapping to what McDaniel ran here, so the talent in Miami matches the scheme.

Slowik’s Rise & Fall in Houston

Slowik’s first season with the Texans was excellent with Stroud leading the Texans to a 10-7 record. He was given a 1-year extension, but it went south fast. Stroud struggled, was beat up all season, and the offense took a step back. Slowik was fired at the end of the season.

While issues with Stroud popped up, there was plenty of issues on the offensive line that helped the decline. But there was also talk of Slowik being predictable, getting calls late to the line of scrimmage, and poor protection scheme’s as well. So, it’s hard to lay the blame on why Slowik’s offense failed, but he clearly had a hand in it.

With Houston, Slowik’s offense thrived on rhythm, spacing, and timing. However, the system also revealed its constraints. When offensive line injuries mounted or defenses disrupted timing, the Texans struggled to generate consistent inside efficiency. Those stretches highlighted an important truth about Slowik’s scheme: it was effective, but personnel-dependent and he didn’t seem to have the ability to uplift them with play calls.

Slowik Will Face the Same Challenges… Has he Grown Since Houston?

For Miami, those lessons carried weight. You can bet with the best pay per head that the Dolphins’ offensive line had been inconsistent, especially along the interior. So, either Slowik must prove his scheme can mitigate a weak offensive line or the Phins O-line must improve.

However you slice it, Sullivan must build a better offensive line. Maybe if he does Slowik can show he has the right stuff! If not, then the next OC will benefit.

Even if Slowik is just a stopgap for a season, the key for the future is Sullivan and Hafley. If they prove to be the right guys, then a better OC can be brought in 2027 and not much is lost.

We’ll see on all accounts soon enough!
