Phins Hold Their Best Hand of the Season V.S. Skins

The Jets, Bengals, Redskins, and Dolphins are the NFL’s four winless teams heading into Sunday. Miami will match up against all of the other ‘loser’ teams this season… and the Jets twice.

These games are considered the Phins ‘winnable’ ones according to the various betting software for bookmakers.

The downside to winning any of these games though is it will hurt our chance of getting the 1st overall pick in 2020. Considering the postseason is already lost that would be a shame if Miami only ends up with one or two games. What would add insult to injury is if Adam Gase and the New York Jets actually ended up with the top pick next year instead. Gase would love to cause the Phins to miss out on Tua and bring disaster to Ross and the Dolphins.

Miami has a chance to cement or stall all the tank talk

The Dolphins face the Skins Sunday with the title for the worst record on the line. Phins have the home-field advantage, and the temperature is expected to be warm (84 degrees). This might the last home game with this type of advantage as the next home game comes in November. If Miami wants a win, this as good a time to get it as there will be this season.

But, do they really want the “W”? I bet the fanbase is split down the middle. Phinsnews is divided.

The Redskins have just fired their head coach Jay Gruden and have started three different QBs this season. Washington’s turmoil matches, maybe even exceed, Miami’s. The oddsmakers currently have the Dolphins as a small +3.5 underdog at home. This is probably the lowest spreads the Dolphins will have all season.

The Dolphins are also coming off a bye week and have played progressively better in each game. They have a ton of advantages. It will very interesting to see how they play this week against a team that’s just as bad as they are. This has all the signs of being a ‘slop fest’ with no team looking to win.

This graphic shows how ugly this game is viewed

The Redskins Offense has been as bad as the Dolphins, so this could be a real low scoring defensive battle. Both teams have been anemic on offense and who makes the least amount of mistakes will probably decide the outcome.

Hard to believe but Miami has been excellent at not drawing yellow flags

The Dolphins have at least been good at limiting penalties. They do have one less game under their belt, but they are ranked #1 in the league with 23 total penalties. Even if you added 10 more penalties, they’d still be ranked 5th in the NFL. Not too shabby, and a good sign for the staff. Conversely, Washington is ranked 30th with 45 total yellow flags. If Flores can get the team to continue this trend, the edge in discipline could decide the game.

Turnovers are a great factor in every game. But in this one, a single turnover could be all it takes to help these terrible offenses put enough point up for the win.

Again, winning could be a loss

The reports are that this organization is hell-bent on getting Tua. Not having the first overall pick could mean the Phins will need to part with two of their 3 first-round picks just to trade up.  That will hurt the rebuild.

Flores, on the other hand, has stated this is not a tank job and the team is improving.

What is the truth?

This Sunday will bring a load of clarity.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans’ thoughts on whether we actually want to see this team win or lose this weekend?

    On the honest note!

Tua would not be my 1st picked but that’s my opinion. Realistically Tua a two time Heisman runner up and maybe winner makes it difficult for A team to overlooked him: When a player is on that Heisman list it only verified the player is one of the top in the country. But what is good we have 3 picks in the 1st round. There are really some good QB’s in the 2020 draft but they are day two and three picks.

Tua and Herbert are the only two QB’s that should be listed in the 1st round. Tua would be in that 1st to 5th best player and Herbert maybe about 15th to 25th picked. QB Burrow and talented receivers 22 passing TD’s 3rd most in LSU program, with 3 games of 5 touchdown passes for LSU great Offense it should be a test for the Gator’s great Defense 26 sack for them this season already with 12 picks leading the country. I would say if QB Burrow’s keep his poise and they beat Florida Gator’s I would draft him late in the 1st round. The Gator’s have a rookie QB but good but not that good. Who wins they say Defense win games?

Read somewhere Fromm is moving up to if he plays well in some tough games. Didn’t like his arm… That’s another thing, Brady and Rodger both improved their throwing power on the pro level. So hard to evaluate QBs…

I give it to you being a die hard. But there is no honor in winning 6 games vs losing to gained the number one picked. Think about it?, We have been 6 or 8 wins for two decades.

We loose this season and season two of Flores we desperately attempt to win every game but will lose even worst because not enough key players yet to help Josh Rosen. 2021 Trevor Lawrence maybe within reached along with another good draft. Year 3 of Flores should see this thing turn around. Believe it or not Admin we are really that Bad and drafting three players in the 1st round will does not warrant a play off team the next season?

It’s not about being a die-hard… it’s about the quality of the regime. Either they are trying to lose games or trying to win them. If they are trying to lose… okay, then Flores is a liar (maybe smart to do it but a liar) and we won’t have a clue what he is as a coach. That’s okay too… but if you try to lose it’s in your DNA. True winners never try to lose. IF he is trying to win and can’t that means he’s at best an above average coach and evaluator. Of all the top teams, I think only the Rams had the #1 pick and Goff isn’t that good. So this is really it. Either he isn’t or is trying and can’t. This roster isn’t so bad that 0-16 is the truth. I’d say 3-4 wins is what an average to slightly above avg coach could do with this roster. If Flores is trying and gets that or can’t even get that then the reality is we’ll be waiting for 5 years till he gets canned and we go fish again…

Just a little fact: Miami Dolphins worst 10 year season (Miami Dolphins 2004-2013 66-94 (.413))

I have been a Miami fan forever, having said that I haven’t watched a game in four years and will not watch anymore. I still believe they should not waste a number one pick and place all their chips on one player. There are a number of defensive players that will help the team. They should shore up their defense with the boatload of picks they have. Use them for BOTH lines and get a couple of free agents as wide receivers and running backs. If Rosen doesn’t work out in a year or two they will be able to build a team worthy of a good pick and when he comes he will have a better team and better chance to help it. If indeed Rosen is the answer in two years he will know the system and the team will be in a good spot for a run at the playoffs. No team as bad as Miami was ever turned around in one year with one pick.

My timeline if this is a top-shelf regime is 5-6 wins this year, 6-9 2020 and then wildcard 2021. Look at how Seattle build their dynasty or Pats as an example… two years to put it together and the 3rd shows some signs of life. I just don’t think that a true winner would try to lose, Ted. Sorry to hear you aren’t watching them anymore…. but I get it. So you won’t ever watch them again? Or are you waiting for them to show some life before you do?

IF we earned the 1st round picked we would have the opportunity to set the stage for the 2020 draft, meaning 31 teams would have to make adjustments.

My number one picked in this draft is Chase Young:

Very true. But, what’s the cost? What truth will be revealed if we are that bad? I’m not saying this is the truth, but I disagree with you and Jimmy and Edwin above. If we can get to 6 wins (or so) that means the staff made more out of less. That is a great sign for the future. Also, it would mean Grier found gems on the scrap heap and Flores and Co. developed them. We could still have a great staff and FO is we get the #1 pick, but there would be little indication that we did. I just want to see Miami find their QB without needing the #1 overall. I want to see them trade back with one of their top picks to stack for the future. Maybe I’m just stubborn? Chiefs, Jags, Pats, Steelers, Saints, and on found their QB without needing that top pick. If Tua were a top 5 talent for sure… do it. But, I don’t see him as that… Again, I could be wrong here too…
