Phins’ Linebackers Go To Work

The Dolphins have completed another training camp practice, and it is good to see that the coaching staff is using these precious practices to work on some of the glaring weaknesses seen in the Atlanta Preseason game.

All the football betting software fans know that the biggest negative take away from the first preseason game for the Dolphins was the piss poor tackling by the defense.

The coaching staff decided to “tackle” the tackling issue by having a very physical practice and working on someone on one linebacker versus running backs wrap up Oklahoma drill. When the drill began the running backs were absolutely embarrassing the linebackers, but fortunately the linebackers were able to finish up strong with Koa Misi, looking like the best tackler of the group. I like that the coaches installed this drill into the practice today, and after watching it, the coaching staff needs to continue to use this drill during the remainder of training camp, because the linebackers need to improve a lot more if they want to solve this tackling problem.

Other noticeable observations from this practice, was that the Phins were working out some veteran QB’s, such as Brady Quinn, John Skelton, and Rex Grossman. This may mean that Matt Moore’s sore shoulder is a lot worse than the team is letting on, so it will be interesting to see what unfolds.

The injuries for the Dolphins continue to pile up with Jason Fox, Mike Gillislee, and Chris McCain sitting out of practice. The Dolphins are very thin at the running back position with only Lamar Miller and Orleans Darkwa able to stay healthy and not miss practice time. However, Moreno seems to be getting closer to regaining his health and is beginning to flash his skills in practice. He had an especially productive practice today, producing some quality runs, and showing off his zone running ability. One other notable player that is still banged up is Charles Clay, who still appears to be limping around, and is now practicing with a brace on his knee. Just from what I can see, it looks like the coaching staff is going to have the bubble wrap on Clay for the entire preseason, with the chance of him not even playing in any of the 3 remaining preseason games. This means that one of the backup TE’s on the team like Sims, Lynch, and Egnew will need to start stepping up and separating themselves from the rest of the pack. At the moment it appears that Sims is taking the lead in the competition, by actually making some plays in practice, as his touchdown grabs from Tannehill during 11-on-11 drills.

One last positive from practice was that Tannehill and Hartline have rekindled their connection and produced a long 38-yard play and a 75-yard touchdown play. In addition to Tannehill’s throwing touchdowns today, he also continues to use his legs to create plays and had a touchdown run today.

If we go into the season with Ellerbee, Wheeler and Misi, this group will cost us wins, period. With Philbin and Crew’s job on the line, I’m not sure why they aren’t showing more urgency in addressing this position. My hope is, we can pick up a serviceable OLB at 53 man cuts, but if this is the group we end up with, expect to lose several games we’d otherwise win.

Yes unfortunately this group was an issue last season and will be an issue this year. I am hoping they at least try to sign someone that gets cut, but this does not mean it will actually be an upgrade over what we already have. They should maybe think about moving Dion Jordan to linebacker after his suspension

I may be crazy but if I were the coach I would grab Tebow and throw him in the next preseason game from the start and let him get his QB legs under him and prove or dis prove what he can do. What’s to loose at this point? Denver was the only team to do that and they went to the playoffs, maybe it was a fluke but I think he is a winner!
