Phins can only hope to play spoilers against the Bills
The Miami Dolphins host the Bills in a game that should carry heavy weight, but division implications for the Phins are off the table and this game is just a chance for Miami to try regaining some pride. The Dolphins can only really play spoiler because they are too deep in a hole to climb out. The rivalry is long-standing, but it’s been lopsided for some time with the Bills have dominating, winning 16 of the last 18 meetings.
Buffalo comes in at 6-2, riding high in the AFC East and the heavy (+9.5-point) favorites to beat the Dolphins in their own house. Miami is a miserable 2-7 on the season, but maybe playing spoiler can make fans feel better about their team… at least for one day.
What Miami Must Get Right
For the Dolphins, this game isn’t just about winning—it’s about showing fight. You can bet with the best pay per head that if Mike McDaniel wants to keep his job beyond this season, Miami must show they can play with urgency. If they lean into a clear identity (running the ball, controlling tempo, limiting mistakes), they have a chance to compete.
As you can see below, the Bills out match the Phins in most key categories. But, as if the Phins don’t have enough problems, the Bills defense play much better on the road and Miami’s defense much worse at home.
Buffalo’s defense allows 50 yards less passing and 10 pts less on the road. In contrast, Miami allows 65 more passing yards at home and slightly more rush yards and points at home. This doesn’t bode well for the Phins chances and demands Miami’s run game have great success because it’s the Bills only defensive weakness.
The slight good news is the Dolphins have generated slightly more rush yards and an extra 3 points at home compared to being on the road.
Final Word
On paper, the Bills are heavily favored and expected to win — models give them ~ 79 %+ win probability. So, this one looks like a steep uphill fight for the Dolphins to even make it close. But many fans may see a loss to the Bills as a win and a win over them as a loss because getting the best draft pick possible is the only hope they have left.
Honestly, I might be in that camp if we had serious leaders who I could trust to draft wisely. But I don’t feel comfortable with those in charge now or that we’ll find great leaders in the offseason. I’ll root for a win because at least spoiling the Bills’ season–even a little– is a concrete positive without hopium attached.
Go Phins!!!
