Phins Mandatory Minicamp: Day 1& 2 News!

The Miami Dolphins commenced their 2025 mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, June 10, at the Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens. Head coach Mike McDaniel emphasized a heightened sense of urgency following a disappointing 8–9 season that saw the team narrowly miss the playoffs. The opening day showcased a blend of veteran leadership, emerging talent, and ongoing roster uncertainties.

But talk is talk and this is glorified touch football at this stage, so everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Still, we need to keep our eye what is going on so we can match it up with Training Camp to get a better evaluation.

Tua Tagovailoa’s Physical Transformation

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa turned heads with a noticeable physical transformation. Having previously faced criticism for his conditioning, Tua appeared leaner and more agile. He demonstrated improved mobility during practice, including a standout 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. Tua’s commitment to staying healthy was evident as he emphasized the importance of knowing when to let go of a play to ensure longevity on the field. His leadership and renewed focus signal a pivotal season ahead. But will it continue through the season, and will he remember to protect himself in the heat of the moment?

Unfortunately, we’ll only know if this is more than words or not when the bullets fly during the season.

Backups have struggled and Zach Wilson has looked poor. Timing, accuracy, and interceptions have marred his two days. It’s early, but Wilson has shown what he has always been. Can he grow? Sure. But, until we see him improve, it’s best not to get too much hope that he will.

Absences: Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey, Seiler Limits himself

Two notable absences marked the first day of minicamp. Tight end Jonnu Smith, the Dolphins’ sole Pro Bowler last season, was absent as he seeks a contract extension following a record-setting 2024 season. Head coach McDaniel acknowledged Smith’s importance to the offense but refrained from commenting further on the situation. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey, embroiled in trade discussions, also missed practice. McDaniel maintained that Ramsey’s absence was excused, focusing instead on the team’s current roster.

Likely both are gone. Interestingly, Steelers have inquired about both Smith and Ramsey.

Zach Sieler, unhappy with his contract–and he should be–was on the field but limited his participation to drills. This is a big storyline. I doubt he holds out though. Still, it could heat up and likely will next season if not this one. You can bet with the best pay per head that if someone should get Grier to open the purse strings it should be Sieler.

Chubb back to 100%

Brandon Chubb will be a huge piece to the defensive success of this season, and he looks 100% back from his long layoff due to injuries. This is huge news. Chubb on the opposite side of Chop Robinson is key. Chubb will be the strongside edge and Chop on the weakside where the run stop won’t be so demanding. Jalen Phillips is still easing his way in, but if he can come back strong, along with Chubb and Chop, Miami will have a very potent edge group.

Looking Ahead

As the Dolphins continue their minicamp through Thursday, June 12, all eyes will be on the evolving dynamics within the roster. The team aims to solidify its lineup, address contract negotiations, and foster the competitive spirit necessary to contend in the upcoming season. With a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talents, the Dolphins are poised to make significant strides as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season. Let’s hope it plays out as good as it looks now!
