Phins Minicamp Ends… Hop, Skip & Jump To 2019 Season

Phins minicamp is over and now it’s the calm before the storm

From the end of Phins minicamp to Training Camp is the period when Miami Dolphins news and action is at its lowest…

… hopefully.

Barring a trade, any news from now till Training Camp would be bad news involving injuries and players getting in trouble. Let’s hope we don’t have any of that. This new regime needs every bit of positive mojo heading into the 2019 Season.

This is one reason why Reshad Jones’ decision to work out on his own was the wrong move for the team.

Optics aren’t always indicative of the ‘truth’, but they do affect the narrative… And in an era of full spectrum media coverage, a negative narrative can fuel a negative outcome.

While Jones forked over 100k not to show and work out on his own, he was spared a lot more than that by the leniency of the club. Miami could have removed his guaranteed money when he quit in the middle of the Jets game through breach of contract. So, showing up for even a handful of days would have removed a negative storyline, supported the new regime, and wouldn’t have set his rehab back.

Yes, these practices were voluntary… so is leadership.

The narrative with Jones and the Dolphins is now ‘will he stay or go’? Pay per head sites are wagering he’ll be a Phin in 2019… until next year when it’s a 100% gone.

At this point, all I can say is, “Que sera, sera.”

Here’s the last bit of information from Phins Minicamp to sink your teeth into:
  • Big Wide Receivers DeVante Parker and Preston Williams stood out while Bryce Butler was down due to injury. Good news, but the reality is it’s glorified touch football at this point.
  • Reshad Jones was rotated in an out due to missing OTAs and not up to speed. Jones will likely see plenty of action this season… but he won’t be in on every snap like in year past. When rotated out in the Jets game he benched himself. How will he respond to a season worth of rotation?
  • Jesse Davis was the ‘starting’ Right Tackle, which was expected. I don’t see him losing the spot.
  • Chris Reed ‘started’ at Right Guard. He seems to have shaken off the nick that kept him from OTAs.
  • Jalen Davis has made some noise in minicamp. Will this type of play continue when it counts?
  • Both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen looked effective, but Fitzmagic has a sizable lead. I think this scheme will suit Fitz very well.
  • Charles Harris was sidelined by a left-hand injury that’s been ongoing.
  • Tight End Durham Smythe was sidelined with an undisclosed injury, as was FA acquisition Dwayne Allen.
  • Bobby McCain received a load of reps at Free Safety. Indications are he’s more than being considered as just a back-up at the spot.
  • Jamiyus Pittman, Chase Allen, Cordrea Tankersley, and Albert Wilson continued to rehab from their injuries.
  • Jakeem Grant participated and is near 100%.
Well, that’s the wrap-up.

Some writers are a bit ho-hum about the situation. But the thing to keep in mind is that the potency of this offense and defense (if there is any) will come from play calling, game planning, and half-time adjustments. This is a team, as in New England, that is based on the concept of flexibility and attacking what opposing teams don’t do well.

Will this plan succeed?

Don’t know.

What I do know is that this concept has been winning battles since time immemorial… and the Patriots didn’t invent it. Ask Sun Tzu… or I should say read his treatise, “Art of War“.

Now is Brian Flores and Co. equal to Sun Tzu… or even a Belichick lite?

Don’t know. Well see very soon. Go Phins!!!
