Phins News: Latest Update on Knowshon Moreno

phins news

Yesterday the Miami Dolphins decided to start looking for alternative ways to put some added life into their anemic running game. The Dolphins brought in Denver running back Knowshon Moreno, to see if he would be a worthy addition to the team.

Right off the bat this screams to Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans that the Miami Dolphins are not thrilled with their current tandem of Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas. However, before phins fan nation gets excited about Knowshon Moreno, lets take a look at if this really is the upgrade at running back that we are looking for. On paper Moreno rushed for 1038 yards, 10 TD’s and 4.3 yards per carry average. This is almost better than combined duo of Miller and Thomas who ran for 1114 yards, 6 TD’s and 3.85 yards per carry. However, there is one indisputable factor that can’t be quantified enough in Moreno’s numbers, and that is the Peyton Manning Factor. Moreno was pretty much a bust in Denver before Manning arrived, so buyer beware what type of production the next team will get from Moreno, considering he will not have Manning to help pad his stats.

Moreno did prove last year that he was a very good pass blocking running back and did a good job picking up the blitz for Manning. Phins fans should not forget that during Philbin’s tenure he has been adamant about having a running back that can block in passing situations. However, Pro Football Focus, not sure what they use to achieve their grades, but they have Moreno graded as the 28th best blocking back slightly ahead of Daniel Thomas (31st), but surprisingly they have Miller as the best blocker of the bunch ranked 20th. This really doesn’t make sense since all the coaches kept saying that Miller’s worst aspect of his game was his blocking.

Besides the Manning factor, the other concern is there has been little demand for the free-agent Moreno, and his current team does not seem that much in a rush to re-sign him. Also throw in the factor that Moreno was playing in a contract year. So to me there are quite a few red flags going up on Moreno. Lastly, Hickey has stated multiple times that he prefers to find running backs in the Draft, and he did find Doug Martin 2 years ago, so to me this seems like a thorough way to kick the tires on the available running backs, however it would be surprising to see the Dolphins spend decent money on a player that may only be marginally better than what we currently have.
