Phins Patrick Graham Goes to Giants
Phins defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will now coach for the Giants
The weird Miami Dolphins ride continues as Brian Flores has moved on from another coordinator. Two weeks ago it was the release of Chad O’Shea for Chan Gailey. This week it is Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham, who will now perform the same duties for new Giants Head Coach Joe Judge.
Graham was a former defensive line coach for the Giants in 2016 and 2017. He also worked with Judge with the Patriots, so there are plenty of connections there.
I didn’t dislike Graham, but I wasn’t overwhelmed by him either. The loss of O’Shea felt like a loss. On the other hand, Graham moving on feels at the very worst-case a lateral move.
Josh Boyer is now in charge of the 2020 Phins defense
Tom Pessisario of the NFL Network reported that Josh Boyer, Miami’s defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach will assume Graham’s duties. Boyer and quarterback coach Jerry Schuplinski were the two coaches Miami chose to protect from poaching. Flores had to approve the move because Graham is serving in an equal capacity, so this says a lot of what they think of Boyer.
According to ESPN, ” Boyer has a reputation of identifying and developing hidden defensive talent, with success stories like Titans cornerback Malcolm Butler, Patriots cornerbacks J.C. Jackson and Jonathan Jones and Dolphins cornerback Nik Needham. “
Given the situation with Howard and the general state of the Dolphins secondary, keeping Boyer through a promotion was wise. I’m very interested though to see if he can call a game. Finding talent is a huge plus for a defensive coordinator, but the job’s primary function is calling plays. You can bet with the sports betting software sites that Flores must be sure Boyer can do the job or he would have retained Graham.
But, even if Boyer ends up the better defensive coordinator, 2020 will mean on the job training and bumps along the learning curve for him. It’s not the end of the world if Boyer ends up an upgrade over Graham.
Let’s hope.
Well, as if there weren’t enough storylines for Phins fans to keep an eye for 2020. Go Phins!!!
