Phins/Saints Preseason Game Last Stop Before It Counts
Normally, the 4th Preseason Game is of little importance… but this year it will have a heap of impact
The Phins 4th Preseason Game against the Saints will see plenty of players fighting for their Phins future.
This isn’t the usual mode of operations in the NFL.
The 4th Preseason Game is usually about resting your starters and letting some of the backend players prove they should stick. For most players around the NFL, it’s about getting enough tape so opportunities elsewhere may appear.
But with Brian Flores and Co. still on the fence in some key areas, this 4th Preseason Game needs to be played to get a clearer picture for not just cuts and trades…. but for their starters Week 1 as well. There’s a wave of Free Agents that will soon come on the market when teams trim down to their 53 man roster. The Phins will have to pounce on them with a clear vision.

Key Phins on the radar for tonight
QB Josh Rosen could make Flores’ decision to start Fitzpatrick much harder with a stellar outing. And against back-end players… he’d better.
DeVante Parker had an interesting post today on Twitter, he needs to show something more than an interesting Twitter post and injuries though. If cut he’ll count $4.5 million against the Cap. This could be digested, but I’d expect him traded for a late-round pick ($0 Cap hit if traded) or kept before being cut.
‘Drama’ has surrounded Kenny Stills this preseason. But, however you feel about him, he’s talented. Stills brings value, so I’d expect him kept or traded before being cut. He has a $4.75 million Cap hit if cut and only $1.75 million if traded.
Dwayne Allen has been invisible or ugly this preseason. It will cost Miami $1.25 million to cut him.
Kiko Alonso practiced this week and should see action. With an $8 million Cap hit if released, he’s on the team unless there’s a trade. But, he must show something. No?!
Vincent Taylor has been slow-rolled into the Preseason. I expect to see him get a chance to knock the rust off. Health is his primary concern.
Phins that are on the cusp
TE Durham Smythe has been hit or miss. Does he offer a better option than Allen?
TE Chris Myarick is big 6’5” 255lbs and has made some plays. Can he show enough to stick?
DLs Ledbetter and Hendrix have shown a ton. Do they stick? You can bet with the pay per head services like www.AcePerHead.com they do. But, if so, who do these two surprises force Phins to cut in their place?
WR Isaiah Ford has shown plenty. Will it be enough? What happens to Stills and Parker will likely determine his status.
OT Isaiah Prince is a project, but he has come along. Is it enough to make the 53 man roster? I think he’ll stick… unless he collapses tonight.
CB Nik Needham has seen plenty of action with mixed results. Does he make the team? Is he a placeholder till Cordrea Tankersley come off short term I.R.?
There will be plenty of surprise cuts and players making the 53 man roster.
Fans have to admit that this has been as entertaining a preseason as there’s been in South Florida. Of course, the real question is what will all these twists and turns amount to in wins?
