Phins Scrimmage / Practice Wrap Up

Flags flew a lot at the Phins scrimmage/practice, but…

The Phins canceled scrimmage transformed into a semi-live practice was colored yellow with 17 total penalties. While the zebras were as active as the players themselves today, the ‘sky is falling’ on Brian Flores discipline is premature.

Of the 17 penalties, 4 were on the defense and 13 on the offense with the majority coming from the Offensive Line. The 2nd team O-line bore the bulk of those penalties. In fact, 2nd teamer tackle Jordan Mills was pulled from his 1st team shot due to penalties.

If I know Flores, I’d expect a cut or some to be inches from a cut after this performance.

As for the penalties, Week 2 & 3 of Preseason is where questions should be asked if this lack of discipline continues. This is a young, new team with new coaches and two QBs vying for the starting role with a roster in the tryout mode. Week 1 of Preseason should certainly see minimal penalties from the starters though.

Still, this wasn’t a good sign however you want to spin it and today does little to alter my current prediction of 6 wins this year.

But, there was plenty of good signs coming from today as well.

Before the good, injuries are creeping up and some notable ones.

“Big” Free Agent acquisition TE Dwayne Allen (undisclosed injury) aid he hopes to be available for the Regular Season opener… but he didn’t guarantee it
Rb Ballage was available (with a compression sleeve on his leg for limited participation
Reshad Jones watched practice with a walking boot on his right foot
Other absent players were Tankersley (I.R. candidate?), Hull, Woodard, McMillan, and Grant

Miami signed nick DeLuca, LB North Dakota State yesterday. Does this point to issues with the LBs or concern with McMillan’s health?

So here are the reports from the scrimmage/practice

High pick underachievers Nate Orchard and Adolphus Washington had some shine today
Charles Harris started again and flashed consistently, once beating Dieter for a sack
Deiter still has green on him
Gesicki had a few nice catches
Andrew Van Ginkel made some plays
Rosen had a pretty good day, even though he was late on a few occasions. Still, a sweet bomb to Stills over Howard showed his excellent arm talent
Rosen and Williams appearing a “thing” as Williams had an excellent day. This kid might be a big deal as, beyond his performance throughout camp, Howard is impressed with him. Legit or just gassing him… we’ll see if he can continue his dominance in Preseason games.
TE O’Leary more of the same good he has shown so far… good off the scrap heap pick up
With 1st and 2nd and a mix of 3rd teams players prinked in, the Offense went 13 drives, 1 TD, 4 FGs
DarkhorseDEs Dewayne Hendrix and Jonathan Ledbetter are pushing for a spot with some nice plays… Both are BIG 3-4 edge setters. Likely one or the other
The right side of starting O-line opened some nice holes in the run game

Williams and Josh Rosen’s improvement should be viewed as big stories and appear legit.

OL Michael Dunn had his first positive report… given the 2nd team’s a longer look at him might be needed
2nd teamer OG Will Holden was hurt after getting destroyed off the ball. He was a starter under Flaherty.
Kenyan Drake looked brilliant in his time with the ones due to Ballage being limited. He opened the day with a 40-yard run followed up by a short TD catch Phins have a pretty good group here.
T.J. McDonald looked good
Fitzpatrick was picked twice by Howard who was again dominant despite a 3rd pick going between his hands for a TD to Ford.
Vince Taylor keeps coming… what an excellent draft pick
Wilkens continues to make plays
Reports of plenty pressure up the middle of the O-line… but which units and players weren’t mentioned. Wished I was there.
LB Baker is the center of this LB group and is showing he could be special

5 days till we can really sink our teeth in an opinion

Adding to the good news is that Akeem Spence gushed over LB Sam Eguavoen who continues to start, ” Sam is willing to come downhill, strike a fullback or guard. He’s very athletic, can cover well. Real vocal leader and always working, always in the film room studying and trying to take his game to the next level.”

Man, McMillan and Kiko better watch out. Very exciting news… especially if we see it come game time.

There was another report where DeVante Parker quit on an End Zone play because McDonald was barreling down on him. The battle between him and Williams will be very interesting.

Everything counts, but somethings more than others

I’m dying for some tape to comb through to see what is really what with these 2019 Phins. Monday is the last day of practice open to the public, so the reality of things will become even foggier until the Falcons game. Week 1 of Preseason will sharpen the picture quite a bit… especially with these O-line starters. Can’t wait. Go Phins!!!
