Protect Me

If Ryan Tannehill were allowed to decide who the Dolphins would draft in the first round, do you guys think he would select a wide receiver or an offensive lineman? If Tannehill were asked this question I’m sure he would give a politically non-committal answer, however, if he truly had to pick one or the other I believe he would select an offensive lineman. For starters, the only way Tannehill can help his team to win is if he is healthy, and if he is not protected adequately by his lineman, then his health is more at risk. Also, Tannehill has the skill set and other intangibles to be a very good QB in this league, however, it is a lot harder to reach his potential if he is under constant duress and is running for his life.

With all that being said, the best pay per head reviews would say that it would be wise for Miami to invest another first-round pick in an offensive lineman, in order to indirectly help their pseudo franchise QB reach his full potential. (I say pseudo because Miami still has not made the big plunge and invested in a long term contract, but it is expected that they will.) Brandon Scherff is the consensus number one overall lineman in the draft, but most fans believe he will be selected in the top 10, which is just out of reach of the Phins first pick at number 14. Another option is LSU‘s La’el Collins, but there is chatter that a team in the top ten really likes him, so he may also not be available when Miami is on the clock. The next top-rated lineman is Ereck Flowers, the OT from the University of Miami.

Flowers is a colossal human being at 6’6”, 329 pounds, and many sports betting software experts believe he has the goods to be a quality starting Left Tackle in the NFL. Miami would not need him to play LT if Albert is healthy, however, he can easily play one of the two Guard positions, and provide depth at the LT position if need be. His biggest strength is his run blocking ability, which is a key quality for the Guard position. He led all offensive lineman in the bench press drill with 37 reps, and he had a quick 40 time of 5.29 seconds for a young man of his size. He plays with power and a mean streak and demonstrates a talent for playing through the whistle. The only knock on him is that he does do more waist pending than knee pending in regards to his blocking technique, however, this is something that can easily be corrected at the next level.

I would not mind Miami selecting Flowers in the first round, and I especially like that he plays with a mean streak and is a tough hard-nosed football player. As I have said countless times before, a team can never have enough tough hard-nosed players and he would raise the level of the competition for both the offensive and defensive line personnel.

What do the rest of the Miami Dolphin News fans think about selecting Ereck Flowers in the first round?

Congratulation to Jamil Douglass Dolphins 4th round pick at 114th.

Jamil Douglas | OG, Arizona State
    Height: 6-4 Weight: 304
A guy with extensive experience at tackle and guard who´s more athletic than strong as a lineman. He needs time to develop.

Dolphins draft Jamil in the 4th round I do believe that he will be a contributor in protecting the QB and opening rushing lanes. Good Pick.

Jamil Douglas, OT, Arizona StateParticulars: 6-4, 300, senior
Buzz: He will be a third-year starter for the Sun Devils this fall, but this season he’ll be at left tackle instead of guard, where he has started the past two seasons. Douglas is legendary in ASU’s weight room, with a power clean of 385 pounds, a bench press of 430 and a squat of 565. He has gained 40 pounds since arriving at ASU, but his body-fat percentage is in the low teens. In addition,
Douglas runs the 40 in under 5.0 seconds

Packers.com presents ‘Prospect Primer,’ a video look at an assortment of draft-eligible players who attended the scouting combine in Indianapolis. Arizona State OL Jamil Douglas started 40 consecutive games over the last three years of his college career, mostly at left guard in 2012 and 2013 before moving to left tackle for all 13 games in

  • We still need a offensive lineman, or a middle LB.

Jimmy, I have to agree. Like you said in a previous post, I too am sick and tired of drafting OL as our 1st overall pick in the draft. However, the OL is still an issue at OG position. I think it is our biggest need. With all the off-season FA pick-up players, I would not mind a solid OL. Flowers sounds like he is perfect. Since he plays for UM, I would assume that the Dolphins know his skill set and what he would bring quite well. I also like the fact that he can play both tackle and guard, and has that “mean streak”. I said several months ago that this team lacked toughness down the middle on both sides of the ball. That’s why teams like the Bills and Ravens give Miami so much trouble. Their D-Lines dominate our OL. I think one of the above players including Flowers would be great! It’s not sexy like a WR or RB, but it would greatly enhance the teams’ weakest area OG. Steve.

There will not be an OLineman taken in the first round unless we trade down. Especially w/Collins sliding down draft boards now. If lucky he could slide to us in the second round.
