Phinsnews jaw dropped at the release of Vincent Taylor
The Miami Dolphins have done everything in their power on this Labor Day weekend to pour as much ‘labor’ on sports news writers as humanly possible with all their activity. Phinsnews has viewed most of the moves as positive. But the recent news on the release of Defensive Tackle Vincent Taylor has us pumping the breaks.
After Taylor’s excellent 2018 Season (76 PFF Grade), the expectations for his 2019 Season was very high, despite recovering from a serious injury. I thought Taylor would be a key cog in an improved D-line this season. His absence from preseason action appeared to be a Flores slow-rolling him back into the fold due to his foot injury.
This may or may not have been the case…
… who knows.
Brian Flores only comment on Taylor getting cut was ‘he was released’.
Flores’ statement on Taylor is as accurate as it is vague.
This is a very nagging question to Phinsnews, the pay per head services like www.AcePerHead.com… and many fans.
Possible rationales for Vincent being cut:
- While seemingly the perfect personality of effort and positive demeanor, was Taylor something else behind closed doors?
- Was his effort in rehab sub-par?
- Was his injury so serious his talent was reduced for the foreseeable future? If so, you’d expect an injury settlement.
- Did the scheme not suit him?
It appears the later is the reason… but appears isn’t always is.
In this case, though, it might be.
Phinsnews talked months ago how 2-Gap was the key for defensive linemen sticking. We were right in that regard, but apparently wrong on Taylors ability to be a good fit.
To fill Taylor’s void, the Dolphins signed 6-year vet DT John Jenkins. His 6’4” 340lbs size fills that pure Nose Tackle, 1-2 down run stopper need that they lacked.
But, Jenkins doesn’t have the pass-rushing talent Vincent Taylor displayed. It seems the key to this defense is run stop. That will be nice for Week 1 against the Ravens.
Taylor had two years left on his contract and he was ‘dirt cheap’, so you’d expect them to keep him and at least turn him into a viable trade option. I guess fit had a higher priority. This does hint that Flores isn’t in ‘total tank’ mode or they would have kept him for trade bait at the end of the season.
Despite Taylor not being as big a deal as the Stills and Tunsil trade, this is as, or even more, a shocking a development.
It’s doubtful we’ll ever know definitely the reason for Taylor getting cut… unless he doesn’t see a roster due to health concerns. But, if Taylor does continue to play and goes on to be successful somewhere else, this could end up the first black mark on this regime.
Grier and Flores must have reason to cut Taylor… but is it the right one?
I don’t know all the particulars aside from ‘some sources’ reports. I do know this: My football acumen isn’t equal to Flores and his staff. So, despite what I saw on film last year and my high-hopes for Taylor, this will have to get filed under ‘Wait and See’. While I don’t feel great about this one, this hack sports news blogger is smart enough to know his limitations. Fingers crossed. Go Phins!!!
