Petty is now a Miami Dolphin… So what now?
Petty has ‘QB whisperer’ Gase to help him turn his garbage play into gold
Fourth Round Pick Bryce Petty was supposed to be the man to lead the New York Jets. But with the selection of 3rd overall pick Sam Darnold, the Jets now have a new savior. So Petty and his seven career starts (1-6 record), 53.1 competition percent, 1,353 yards, four touchdowns and 10 interceptions were kicked to the curb.
The Dolphins were low enough on the totem pole to ‘win’ Petty by claiming him off the waiver wire.
Petty is a Dolphin and under the tutelage of ‘QB whisperer’ Adam Gase.
At one time, Gase was legitimately believed to be a man who could dramatically turn a QB around. Now, this monicker has become somewhat of a joke thrown around by disgruntled fans. But if we look at it critically, Gase did have Ryan Tannehill trending upward before his injury. His time with Payton Manning doesn’t count: Payton was great and Gase was an afterthought in his success. On the plus side, Gase did manage Tim Tebow to a postseason win, and in his one year with the Bears, Jay Cutler was at his ‘most disciplined’…
…Of course, to be fair, Culter / Gase ‘part deux’ was a disaster.
So, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad! No? Gase will have to prove it or lose it in 2018
This will be a prime storyline in Gase’s revival or collapse… and in the acquisition of Petty: Can Gase develop at least one of these reclamation projects: Osweiler, Petty, or Fales. And more importantly in the ‘QB whisperer’ storyline: Can Gase get Tannehill to where he was before the injury… and go even beyond that?
All four QB’s will have plenty of time with Gase before the season starts to get it together. Will Petty be a factor?
Petty says he wants to work on his throwing motion. That’s never a good thing at this level. Changing the way you’ve been throwing your whole life is very difficult at this stage of QB’s career. Ask Tim Tebow how tough it was. At this point, pay per head bookie software has Petty a step above just released Brandon Doughty. Most likely both Fales and Osweiler will beat him out. But just like Gase, he’ll get his shot at redemption.
Petty was a cheap roll of the dice and a smart move even if he gets the boot
I have believed in Gase since his arrival. But I thought the worst bumps in the process would have happened in 2016… 2017 was a very unpleasant surprise. Gase was raw, put a staff together ‘Helter Skelter’, had a series of unfortunate circumstances, and a poor talent base. Those are most of the excuses for the disaster of last season. The 2018 Season has none of that… so it’s put up or shut up. Gase has plenty of QBs to work with now… let’s see if he’s really a QB whisperer or not. Go Phins!!!
