With the 2019 Dolphins in a rebuilding mode, fans must prepare for the process
The 2019 Dolphins will begin their season with Adam Gase and Mike Tannenbaum looking for a job. Of the triumvirate power structure, Chris Grier is the last man standing and now with the final say… even over Steven Ross.
‘Grier in charge’ is far from the worst-case scenario for fans and the team. It will take time to find out if it was the best outcome… This Draft will be a strong sign either way.
I leaned towards giving Gase another shot, but Ross’ decision is understandable. I’m definitely happy to be rid of ex-Jet Tannenbaum, whose resume comprises destroying teams financially, and not even making them a better football team.
The faces of the franchise over the last several will change dramatically
Then there’s Ryan Tannehill… who is all but gone. There’s no reason Miami should pay his the full amount of his $26.6 million hit in 2019. With Gase gone as his main advocate, he will be released or my some miracle traded. However, they will still have to eat his $13 million in dead cap money either way.
With Miami rebuilding, no longer will the Front Office waste large chunks of their CAP in Free Agency on older players. This ‘old build model’ is thankfully over.
The Phins rebuild will only work if they can find a Quarterback
The team will get younger, and, likely gain more draft picks to help them build through the draft. Grier will also select at least one QB in this draft… maybe even two. The more players they can bring in the better the odds are that they will find a franchise QB. Right now the only quality prospect they have is Luke Falk. They need two more good prospects either from the draft or Free Agency.
However, before this all happens, Miami has to decide on a new head coach. This choice will set the tone and is the most urgent, pressing, and crucial matter at hand. No duh, right?!
It won’t be long before we find out who will lead the Dolphins in 2019
Some of the best sportsbook software providers like AcePerHead.com are already talking about various names that Miami may consider for its next head coach.
At present, these popular coaching options aren’t on the interview list:
- Rex Ryan
- Josh McDaniels
- Mike Munchak
- Dan Campbell
- Mike McCarthy
- Darren Rizzi
These coaches have a scheduled interview or a request for one has been offered:
- Kris Richard
- Vic Fangio
- Eric Bieniemy
- Brian Flores
Selecting the right head coach is like selecting the right QB. On paper, these guys always appear to be on the rise… but this rarely ends up the case.
The problem is there are so many factors that go into making one guy ‘better’ than another. As an example, Mike McCarthy might have much of his success attributed to having one of the best QBs in the game. Which came first the chicken or the egg? The reality is you have to hire a coach before you find out for sure what he is. This is where a good FO can hedge their best with the interview.
breakdown of the coaches being mentioned
- Dan Campbell already had a shot at being Head Coach in Miami, his added experience with the Saints will boost his resume.
- Rizzi is one of the best special team coaches in the league; however, that does not always translate into being a successful Head Coach. Since he hasn’t received an interview offer, he’ll likely only be an option if Grier’s first choices dry up.
- I’m 100% certain Rex Ryan should not be chosen. All indications are Grier has no interest.
- Bieniemy is Kansas City’s Offensive Coordinator has built up a nice resume with the Chiefs this year, but let’s not forget he has elite talent at QB to help carry his offense. One thing is though that the Andy Reed coaching tree has had a load of success.
- Vic Fangio is the Bears defensive Coordinator and they have one of the best defenses in the league this year. He does though have the best linebacker in football in Mack.
- Munchak is the O-Line coach of Pittsburgh and they have always have had one of the best O-Lines in the league. But can he be a successful head coach? He’s already flopped once in Tennessee.
- Richard is the Defensive CB coach of the Cowboys who has done an excellent job with that group and was a former Seahawk DB coach and Defensive Coordinator that was around for the heyday of the Legion of Doom.
- Brian Flores has been with the Patriots for 11 years. Belichick passed over his own son as Defensive Coordinator for Flores. He appears to check most of the talent boxes. But the Belichick coaching tree is the opposite of the Reed tree… and Flores has only been a coordinator for one year.
Kris Richard checks all the boxes for a rookie coach
I like Richard the most of the bunch. This is just my gut talking. Richard was a former player and has been successful at the two NFL teams he has coached. But no one really knows if this will translate into a successful Head Coach. Whoever they get, let’s hope the 2019 Dolphins get it right!
