Receiver Make-over Suggestions

The Dolphins have already begun their wide receiver off-season make-over by parting ways with veteran wide receiver Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson. This is only the beginning of the Dolphins’ task to clear up cap space and also try to upgrade the receiver position in the process.

I know I have been a supporter of bringing back Mike Wallace, considering his 10 touchdowns from last season, and also the difficulty it will be in trying to unload his contract and personality onto another team, however, yesterday Wallace said he had no interest in restructuring his contract. Basically that was the last straw for me, this painfully shows that Wallace is more concerned with his own success and reward than that of the team. We do not need that type of cancer in the locker room, so Miami should either trade him for what they can get, which at best is probably a 4^th round draft pick, or just bite the bullet and release him, and it at least save some money. After clearing the roster of these three overpaid receivers (Hartline, Wallace, and Gibson) the Phins will be able to have around an extra $15 million in cap space.

The Wallace issue needs to be done before free agency begins in less than two weeks, which will then allow them to target one of the stud free-agent wide receivers. With these savings, the receiver that I suggest the Dolphins to target is actually Green Bay Packer Randall Cobb. First of all, Philbin was the offensive coordinator for the Packers when Cobb was a rookie, so he has some familiarity with him. Cobb is also not an outspoken guy, and he is a very tough football player that is still a very young 24 years old. Lastly, he has great hands and had a huge year last season and would immediately be an upgrade over Wallace in many ways. (91 receptions, 1,287 yards, and 12 touchdowns) He is going to cost some money, but not as much as Bryant and Thomas.

Then the next thing I would do would be to use the draft to stock up on two young receivers. Most of the best pay per head reviews are saying this draft may be just as deep in wide receiver talent as last year’s stellar group. Selecting at the number 14^th spot the Dolphins will be able to select one of the top 4 wide receivers in the draft. (Cooper, White, Parker, Green-Beckham) I believe that White may be the most NFL ready of the group, however, he did so well at the combine that he probably has helped his stock to the point that he will be selected before Miami has a chance at the number 14th spot. If White is off the board I would draft Green-Beckham, because he is that big-bodied red-zone target receiver that the Dolphins have been desperately looking for, plus he has tremendous speed for such a big man. Then I would go one step further and use the third-round pick to select the second-fastest wide receiver in the draft, Phillip Dorsett from Miami U (4.33). Already many of the best sportsbooks in the world are comparing his skill set to Mike Wallace, but going a step further and saying Dorsett is a more polished route-runner than Wallace was coming out of Ole Miss in 2009. Clearly he could be plugged in for Wallace, and would still give the Phins the deep threat they need in order to spread out the field.

So in summary my suggestions would clear cap space for the team, still provide an extremely good semi-veteran on the roster in Randall Cobb, and provide an injection of youth with a big-bodied receiver, which Miami is lacking (Green-Beckham) and speed in Dorsett. Then pair these three new additions with Landry and Matthews and the Dolphins receiving group could be one of the most fearsome receiving groups in the entire NFL, plus they would be young and cheap for 3 to 4 more years.
