Reshad Jones Plans Holdout

Reshad Jones plans on a holdout.

Even though he is the 4th highest paid Safety, Reshad Jones plans on a holdout.

Reshad Jones one of Miami’s best defenders’ plans on a holdout.

Just a short time after a career year and Reshad Jones is now planning a holdout for a new contract.

“Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports Rehad Jones isn’t “content” with his current deal. He’s got two years left on the contract with a base salary of $7.225 million for 2016 and $7.06 million for 2017 and a signing bonus slightly under $1 million for both seasons, per Spotrac.”

Already the fourth highest-paid Safety, Dolphins GM Chris Grier has a potential crisis on his hand. Reshad Jones is a premiere piece of Miami’s defense and any absence will be felt.

First, from his standpoint, Reshad Jones has all the leverage and it’s the perfect time to get a pay raise.

From a fan’s standpoint, it comes as a total surprise and is a bit of a bummer.

From Miami’s standpoint, with only $12mill in cap room next year, this could pose a bit of a problem.

With Reshad Jones holdout looming, is Safety now a need in the draft?

Dawn Aponte could get creative and add years and bonuses to offset the hit. But, this has the potential to set a precedent for a new regime that might lead to more trouble down the road as other players might be interested in gambling and try to imitate Jones.

The holdout creates a potential issue as the draft fast approaches. Does Tannenbaum consider Safety a position that now needs to be addressed with their limited picks? This would put undo stress on their board with only a couple of days before they begin picking.

This isn’t the kind of surprise pay per head bookie fans were hoping for and I hope it’s not a harbinger of things to come. What do Dolphins fans think of Reshad Jones’ holdout?

Trade him! Send the message that no player(s) are above the team. He signed the deal, and has 2 years left, honor your commitment. Miami made the commitment w a 4 year deal that you (Jones) wanted. Because you had a breakout year??? Do it 2 years in a row, and then maybe (MAYBE) start campaigning for a new deal w 1 year left on the original deal that you (Jones) accepted.

Abdul-Quddus played strong safety for the Lions the last 2 years and played it quite well. So at the very least there is Jones’ replacement.

Jones wants to be the highest paid safety in the league? Jones, do you realize that you were part of one of the worse defenses in the league last year? Losing you will not make our defense any worse, and paying you will not make our defense any better. There is only one way for this defense to go in ’16, and that is up^^^^^.

Trade him to the BROWNS or the 49ERS and let them make him the highest paid safety in the league. See then how important being the highest paid is when you are losing repeatedly. Once you are paid the way Jones is, you would think that winning would become a priority and sacrificing a few million to allow the TEAM more cap space to improve on the defense via free agency makes sense for all. Miami has made you a very wealthy person, get on board and try to contribute to winning. If I were Tannebaum, I may offer him a intensive laden contract that could max him out in the 10-11 million $ range if incentives are reached, but that would be it.

That is why the New England Patriots are the franchise they are. Players buy in or hit the road. If Jones were on the Pats and pulled this, he would be traded tomorrow. Time for the Fins to do the same. All in or not, Gase way or the highway. Some players just don’t get it. Disappointing, selfish move on Jones……

Understand that the Dolphins have serious needs? If the PAT really wanted the Fins last Game surely they would have Won it. So I see it really 5 wins and 11 losses? We don’t need to Draft Mediocre this draft?

Dolphins I’m sure the Dolphins can draft 3 Versatile FS for less money I really Like Sean Davis and I’m sure the PAT will grab him.

Tyvis Powell, FS 6 th Rounder

Powell is an energetic player who brings a positive charisma to the defense. Over the past two seasons he played in all 29 games, recording 124 tackles and five interceptions. His redshirt sophomore season he was named defensive MVP of the national championship game against No. 2 Oregon with a game-high nine tackles and a pass break-up in the Buckeyes’ victory. He also intercepted a pass in the end zone to clinch Ohio State’s 42-35 victory over then No. 1-ranked Alabama in the CFP semifinal game at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Deiondre’ Hall, FS 6 Round 6

IN OUR VIEW: A four-year starter in Northern Iowa’s hybrid 3-4 scheme, Hall bounced from safety to linebacker to cornerback and back to safety over his career, playing primarily press-man and off-man coverages. He proved to be a ballhawk wherever he played with 21 passes defended, 11 interceptions and three forced fumbles the past two seasons, earning the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2015.

    Deon Bush 9 Round 6

IN OUR VIEW: Bush was considered one of the better seniors at his position over the summer, but his 2015 season was disappointing as he battled injuries and inconsistency. Whether it be in run support, protecting the middle against the pass or as a gunner on special teams, Bush is a heat-seeking missile with a knack for delivering monster hits.

    Hello DolFans

To those of us who work for a living? 6 Win and 10 Losses and We are demanding a pay raise? I’m thinking lets make a deal during the draft to trade him for some picks? Or give it to him for one season base on performance?

It would helped if the Fins could get more picks in the second round?

    Replacement: Sean Davis

IN OUR VIEW: Another cornerback/safety hybrid, Davis boasts the size, length and muscular build that NFL scouts covet in the secondary. He is an aggressive run defender with the tackling skills and power to dislodge the football, ranking second in the FBS last season with five forced fumbles. Davis, who was listed as a safety at the Senior Bowl, has some ‘tweener traits as an athlete, so his performance in pre-draft drills will give teams a better idea of his best position in the NFL.

  • Wow, what happened to team loyalty. 7 plus MIL is alot of money to play a game. Loved Jones since day one. I always thought his potential was going to be great. Never saw greed from his personality. Disappointed fan.let him sit, draft a replacement and fine him or trade him unless he apologizes to the team and fans. Years ago top players would play their hearts out for love of the game. Some greats and never drew the money they deserved. Disappointed to all fans, most work their skills for chump change.

Yeah, this was a terrible time to do this…He had a great season last year. It was though, his first complete one of pass and run defense. Then there was his PED ban. I think Miami Must make a stand and be willing to move on from him or the inmate will run the asylum. A shame…was a huge supporter – still am – but, that support took a hit, Joseph.

  • Are you serious, not saying he isn’t worth it, but the dolphins can’t afford it.

I say let him sit the OTA’s and when camp starts fine him everyday he does not show up.
Offer to make the fines go away and try to work out negotiations for 2017 season.

I think it’s BS that he wants to hold out now when he knows there financial situation,
Don’t get me wrong he is by far in my opinion one of the top 3 safety’s in the league, but this is the wrong time to hold the organization hostage for more money, hell he still has 2 years left on his current contract.

It also puts undo pressure on this new regime and right before the draft…perfect timing for him…not for the Fins or Fans. Kinda’ is a wet blanket on my draft day excitement.
