Rosen Must Start this Season

Rosen needs to show starter material in 2019

Most fans and sports commentators are applauding the Dolphins for the value they received on their draft day trade for QB Josh Rosen…

… although there are some detractors.

Phinsnews is among those clapping hard and loudly.

We all know the backstory on Rosen being the 10th overall pick last year for the Cardinals and then becoming expendable because of Coach Kingsbury’s longtime infatuation with Kyler Murray. As a result, the Dolphins got a bargain on a young starting QB.

And even though the Dolphins organization stated that Rosen won’t get handed the starting job…

… all Phin fans should hope Rosen earns the starting job.

Now, I was far less thrilled about our signing of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. He isn’t the long-term answer in Miami. It also worried me that Fitzmagic would manage to win us a couple more games… Not enough to make us relevant, but enough to put us in no man’s land of the draft. Same old draft position in the 1st Round—just outside of the top 10.

With Rosen on board, the situation has changed for Miami.

Rosen is young and going into just his second NFL season. Even though he didn’t have a great first season in the NFL, he has valuable starting experience. With his rookie jitters are gone, what we see from Rosen will be what he is.

The beauty of this trade is, not only did we get Rosen cheap, but because of the current situation of a young regime without a franchise QB, Miami can give Rosen a trial run to see if he’s the long-term answer. And if not, Miami can draft one of the elite QB’s in 2020 draft… and this regime won’t suffer a serious setback.

Has Miami’s luck finally changed?

Did we finally land our much-coveted franchise QB?

The only way to know these answers is to get him on the field as soon as possible. Rosen must have a sizable body of work as the starter next season… but he must earn it over lame duck Fitzpatrick. Despite the jokes of Fitzmagic, this won’t be easy for Rosen. The more likely scenario is that ‘Fitz’ will play himself out of the spot.

The only downside to this trade is if we don’t know what Rosen is by the end of the 2019 Season. Good or bad, this regime must determine Rosen’s value heading into next year’s draft.

Fitzpatrick winning the job and coming out the gate hot could pose problems for Miami long-term

As odd as it sounds, Fitzpatrick starting the season and winning could be the worst-case scenario. If we win enough games this year and fall out of a top 5 pick, then it must be because Rosen was the starting QB.

It doesn’t take sports betting software to know winning with Rosen is a much different storyline than winning with Fitzpatrick.

I’ll admit, I expected this upcoming season to be a complete disaster with little to look forward to besides putting ourselves in a position to draft in the Top 5 Pick to get a Tua, Herbert, or Fromm. However, the anticipation of seeing Rosen in action has my eyes glued to see if our beloved Phins have finally found their franchise QB.

If not, it isn’t the end of the world. Miami can still take a shot on a QB in the 1st Round next draft.  Either way, I am pleased that Miami has a new young QB on the roster… even though I am not ‘through the roof’ about Rosen. This move finally shows me that this organization is serious about finding our next franchise QB.

It’s about time!

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about Rosen being the day 1 starter for us this season?

My take is that Josh Rosen will need to play in 2019 for us to find out what we have. My research tells me he is very talented and may very well lift this team to another level. It’s ironic that Sam Darnold and Josh Allen had very similar stats to Josh Rosen in 2018 yet the Jets and Bills are claiming they have their franchise QBs and the Cardinal fans were ready to bail on Rosen.

    Comp% Yds TD INT

    Josh Allen 55.2 2278 11 14
    Sam Darnold 57.7 2865 17 15
    Josh Allen 52.8 2074 10 12

Keeping his stats in mind, Josh Rosen had a terrible O-Line, a terrible Offensive Coordinator who called a lot of awful plays and some awful receivers who dropped some of his passes. Add in the fact that Klingsbury was in love with Kyler Murray and was determined to draft him. So obviously Rosen was the odd man out and the Cardinals had no choice but to move on from him.

Is Rosen a bad quarterback? I say no! Did he make some rookie mistakes? Of course he did. But these were mostly mistakes that with the right coaching can be fixed. Jim Caldwell is going to help this kid. The Dolphins may have found their quarterback or at the very least found a capable backup.

The more I find out about Josh Rosen, the more I like what the Dolphins are doing with him. I will wait to see him play a few games before I crown him franchise QB. But I will predict that he is going to be better than Josh Allen and possibly as good if not better than Sam Darnold.

    Go Dolphins!

I agree… been studying Rosen. I think he’ll be a B grade at least. Miami needs to know if he can be more though. If not they need to go fish and try to upgrade. I still think Fitz will be a tough camp fight if he wants to be one. His fat, cake body though doesn’t scream I want this. IF Flores really holds to a competition battle for everyone, then this will be a great camp. I think there’s no way you can fault them for using the 2nd to get Rosen… We may just have made the best move in decades… we’ll see though.

Hello all, been awol for a bit. Glad to be back with the fellow fin fans.

Rosen was/is a WIN-WIN. If he works out and is the long term answer, WOW, especially with all the draft picks next year and a boat loads of $. If not, we have a young back-up QB for minimum of 3 years on the CHEAP, or they could just cut bait with minimal loss.

Loved the way the draft went, and really excited about this NEW philosophy and regime. Finally a regime that actually acts the part.

**** Also very excited about having a real defensive coordinator. Even though the defense may still lack a few more play makers, I can’t imagine this defense being worse than last years. Just the flexibility this defensive staff brings is enough for me. No more round peg, square hole. maybe we can get something out of Harris after all, I love the fact that our weekly defense will be based on our opponents, not Burke’s VERY predictable 4-3/wide nine (sorry but Burke was in over his head, at least appeared to be) ****

Hey, just glad you are well, brother. I still check up on Lemmus from time to time… no response in over a year. I fear the worst.

I think the philosophy is great. From the FO side of things, they have executed as well as the philosophy. I still need to see if the coaching staff can follow suit. I feel very good at this point. I’m not saying SB winning regime… BUT, I think this regime will at least bring this franchise back to respectability.

Burke made some bad decisions like making McMillan cover deep middle on critical plays… but I think he was strapped with a terrible scheme and players who were lost too much and didn’t fit the terrible scheme… A mixed bag of bad in my opinion. We are in a much better situation in all regards on defense. Really have some extra juice to watch tape these days… going to be fun breaking it all down.

Glad you popped in and are doing well! 🙂

Thanks, glad to be back, hope the best for Lemmus, he’ll be in our prayers. Yea, I may be a bit harsh on Burke, but 2 things stick out; under him we never really seemed to out maneuver or have a certain scheme that would catch teams off guard, secondly; why didn’t Gase hire him with the Jets?

Either way, there are blue skies ahead. We are in much better shape than we have been in for a long long time.

Yeah, me too… life is so crazy. He put up a fence, was bit by a snake, and then his life changed forever. So odd, he was in Vietnam and a snake is what gets him in Florida… Life is strange.
Gase is like Jimmy when he has a team just right that fits his scheme, he can do well. jimmy though was a more rounded coach. Gase is an O guy and that’s it. I like what Flores is building much more.

For the Coaching staff to be able to really evaluate Rosen he need to start period
I Am optimistic I want to think that we found our QB for the next 10-12 years . If he really shows he can handle the starting job this team will be great next year when we get 12 to 13 draft picks and 120 Millions in salary cap space

I’m a bit higher on Rosen than Jimmy… And after doing a ton of research over the last few days, I think he will certainly be the best QB here since Marino… will he be here 10-12? Hope so, but I also hope Miami brings in more young arms to challenge him. If he does rise to a B+, with all the money and pick we have, good time are right around the corner. At the very least, he’ll be a great trade asset in 2 years. I think only injury can stop this trade from being at least a good positive, Jose.

I agree with you 100% now what is your opinion of Tua I know we are a year away but 3 qb will have a chance to be drafted next year probably in the top10

        • admin

I didn’t like his play in the bowl game… that’s the extent. Jimmy watches more college play than I do. I study the college guys when they enter the draft. It’s hard to evaluate him though as he’s on Alabama and he has a strong supporting cast… I’ll watch all the prospective QBs this year as we might be in the running.
