Ross, Grier, & Flores Present Good ‘Tea Leaves’ at NFL Meeting
The NFL Meeting opened the door wide on the Dolphins thought process
The NFL meeting has come and gone and new rules will change the game of football for all fans…
… But, it was the interviews of Dolphins owner Steven Ross, General Chris Grier, and Head Coach Brian Flores and the positive ‘tea leaves’ they offered that Phins News Fans find most interesting.
‘Hit’ quotes are already headlines across Dolphins Media: “Sometimes You’ve Got to Take a Little Pain”, “It (Tanking) is Disrespectful to the Game”, and “Miami Dolphins could Draft a QB in 19 and 20”.
While all these are worthy headlines…
… some other quotes are what Phinsnews finds as the more valuable nuggets.
Yes, it’s all talk… and talk is cheap. Action speaks more truth than words ever will–especially in the NFL. But, there’s also no doubt that ‘outta’ the mouth
Where a man’s heart is his treasures are stored… 100%.
The owner has total control… Success or failure begins with his decisions.
Back in November, when I wrote, “Ross: Build From Scratch, Don’t Try To Remodel A Pile Of…”,it was clear the future depended squarely on Ross.
Only through deep introspection of himself and this franchise was it possible to spare the next decade from being another debacle.
Billionaires have plenty of money and the natural response to that vast success is pride. Unfortunately, humility is key to all wisdom… and old dogs and billionaires are slow to learn new tricks.
The best pay per head services like Ace Per Head.com, were predicting Ross would rinse and repeat his poor decisions.
Steven Ross has always spent the money needed to win, but his interference in a world he knew very little about has been the genesis of every failure over the last ten years. So at the end of the Dolphins 2018 Season, I wondered, “Does Ross have the stones to do what is right?” At his age, would he have enough strength to change?
While I thought Tannenbaum, Grier, and Gase should ALL go, Grier was the most complicated. I was on the fence about his release.
At this point, Ross knew better than me.
Good! I love it!
My distrust of Ross’ football intuition and decision-making process was the biggest blockade to a return of the ‘Glory Days’. But rumors of Dan Marino being very involved in Ross’ decisions planted seeds hope.
It is said, ‘A wise man has many councilors’.
Was Marino the saving grace?
‘Marino to the rescue’ may just be speculation… but it feels fantastic, so I’m sticking with it. The kid in me who reveres ‘Dan the Man’ is just too strong to be resisted.
A leader must be the first in and first out… especially when it comes to owning mistakes
The press conference when Ross introduced Chris Grier as the ‘man in charge’ changed my mind to be ‘Patient Through the Process’. This about-face wasn’t based on anything that Grier said, rather it was the leadership of an honest and humble mea culpa by Ross that earned my respect and trust.
The problem is, this could have been generated by emotion or to gain political ground with the fans.
Time reveals all.
This why Steven Ross’ sincere evaluation of his ownership at the NFL meeting with near three months in between Grier’s introduction was an important benchmark: :
If you love something set it free
Many of Ross’ other quotes about the new process are center stage on the Miami Dolphins site and in reports. But all of them will only stand firm on the humility and wisdom of Ross… and dare I say, the love he has for the Dolphins.
This isn’t a money venture for Ross. There’s likely some ego in it… But as stated under his profile, “Mr. Ross grew up in South Florida and the Dolphins have been a lifetime passion for him. “
Love can make you do stupid things, for sure. While Ross has owned the team for ten years, he has been a fan for decades. It appears now that he loves the team enough to let it go and let those wiser run it right.
Quote from the Dolphins site, “Ross made it clear he does not believe in getting involved in roster decisions because he’s put men in those decision-making positions because he trusts them.”
This is the best news for fans and what makes a great owner.
Brian Flores gets it: Ole’ school is forever
Brian Flores is saying everything right, but a few quotes jumped out at me for several reasons. These are the most important ones I’ve heard so far.
- We will have an emphasis on the Offensive Line, post Draft UDFAs, and Free Agency
- O-line and protection
is , “near and dear to me”. - Offensive Line is something Ross, Grier, and Flores spoke about in the interview phase.
- We don’t have what we need on the OL… yet.
- They are “excited” about my man Jesse Davis. This one was more for me than most Phins Fans. Okay… I’m selfish here–sue me.
By all accounts, we have a coach that’s passionate about the Offensive Line!
I wrote a detailed projection of the Offensive Line under this regime, and thankfully, it ‘seems’ to be heading in that direction.
Flores doesn’t appear to be a guy who fakes it–not in the least…. so, I’m buying what he’s selling.
Chris Grier understands that quarterbacks, not a quarterback, is key
Chris Grier has talked about drafting QB in this draft and next. I like that. But more importantly, he admitted his failure in not pressing the idea of finding someone behind Ryan Tannehill.
This is something Jimmy Bourbon has been shouting from the rooftops for years. It took a while for me to buy in. But now that I have… and more importantly, Grier and Co., the future will be brighter and more secure.
Every Phins Fans has begged for three things: Steven Ross to stay out of football decisions, focus on the Offensive Line, and to find a good Quarterback. Well, now we have a franchise serious about all three. Am I the only one who hears the Twilight Zone music? Go Phins!!!
