‘Rumor Mill’ Time of Year for Phins

The Phins are being attached to nearly every rumor

The NFL season officially ended over a week ago, but for many Miami Dolphins News fans the real fun has started. With more cap space and draft picks than any team in the NFL, the Phins are being linked to just about every rumor involving Free Agents and trades.

You name it, the Dolphins have been attached to it at some point.

Just some of the rumors Miami has been ‘reportedly’ involved with
  • Tom Brady is going to Miami due to connection
  • Cam Newton is going to Miami… well, because.
  • Todd Gurley and a draft pick added in is headed to South Florida so the Rams can free up cap space
  • Melvin Gordon is going to Miami because they ‘need’ a running back.
  • Even Dak Prescott going to Miami had some chirping!
  • Trade up in the draft with the Redskins, Lions, and Bengals is a done deal

Every offseason, it’s the same. The team with a ton of holes to fill and the most ammo gets top billing when it comes to rumors. All of this should be expected… but little to none believed. So, Phins fans don’t get your heart attached to any rumor. In fact, the fewer rumors that actually end up happening the better.

No one wants a repeat of the 2013 playbook

The key to this offseason is Grier making smart and patient decisions. No way do we want a repeat of Jeff Ireland’s 2013 offseason. The Dolphins were in a similar position seven years ago with the most cap space and draft picks. The Dolphins spent big in Free Agency by throwing boatloads of money at WR Mike Wallace, Linebackers Dannell Ellerbe, and Phillip Wheeler. All of these moves ended up busts.

But Ireland wasn’t done with his disaster plan.

The Dolphins followed up their ‘blockbuster’ offseason with big trade up for Dion Jordan, who will most likely go down as Miami’s biggest draft bust. Then Ireland went on to select Jamar Taylor, Dallas Thomas, Will Davis, Jelani Jenkins, Dion Sims, Caleb Sturgis, and Don Jones. All of these careers produced like tits on a bull.

Grier was a part of the 2013 offseason… let’s hope he’s learned A LOT!

GM Chris Grier, who was part of that disastrous offseason, can’t repeat the same mistakes this offseason. If they do, bet with the best sports betting software that Miami is rebuilding again in a few years. Miami must avoid the trap of trying to be the offseason paper champions by spending the most money and making big moves in the draft.

The only area Miami should look to spend sizably in Free Agency is at offensive line, and maybe the defensive line. And even then, they need to spend wisely. Players like DE Jadaveon Clowney must be avoided. While he’s a top talent, he has shown his true colors as a ‘me’ player. Clowney is the exact type of FA Miami needs to avoid at all costs, literally and figuratively.

In the draft, there is a ton of talk that Miami will need to trade up if they want Tua. Sadly, I can really see Miami giving up a bunch of valuable draft assets to acquire Tua. If they do, then Tua will have to be great, because anything less will cause dire long term effects for this franchise.

Avoid a repeat of 2013 at all costs

The Phins need to be smart and keep their draft picks. With a possible 14 draft picks, including 5 picks on Day 1, the Dolphins have everything they need to have a super successful 2020 Draft. If they play their cards right, they could be on their way to being a consistent playoff contender. So please, Miami I’m begging you, don’t fall into that same trap of 2013. We tried overspending on Free Agents and trading away draft picks… and that’s why we are here, rebuilding, again.

Totally agree with you Stephen and all my Dolphan friends are of like mind. We certainly don’t want to trade up for Tua. Take Best QB available at pick 5 and move on
Don’t go for the most expensive free agents and end up overpaying a has been
Trade back if possible to acquire more picks

We can only hope, Ralph. There the whole concept of consensus thinking and such… AI, top intelligence orgs, pollsters, ect. rely on it. Bigger brain stuff than my paygrade. But, I can say that the consensus thinking of the Phins fans has had a better track record than the Dolphins FO for quite some time. Jimmy (who wrote this article) and I are pretty much of a same mind and that is similar to yours and your friends. Let’s hope this FO doesn’t overthink the obvious. I will say, I wouldn’t hate getting Joe Burrow though in a trade up. The kids has a very good shot to be special… in a way, I’d prefer that over drafting Tua at 5. More expensive, but I’d terrified of his injuries combined with the Dolphins luck. still, trading back and getting some more good picks has a nice feel to it. Some many possibilities, Ralph… what a huge offseason.

Jimmy, as I have stated many times, Ireland was by far the worst GM this franchise has ever had. Yes Tannenbaum and Hickey were no great shakes, but Ireland takes the prize. His 7 years destroyed this team and you are right, largely this is why we had to hit the hard re-set button this year. I don’t think Grier will make the same mistakes, as he has seen the negative results first hand. Regarding Tua, no way do I want this team to use valuable draft capital to get him! If we can take him at #5 without any deals, then so be it. I guess we roll the dice and hope he is not injury prone and can stand up to the rigors of the NFL. If he is fragile, he will be done in just a few seasons. Too many holes to fill. Grier has worked hard getting 14 picks, we can’t waste a few 1st & 2nd round picks to get Tua. I say stand pat at #5 if he goes he goes. Draft Herbert or someone else. Next year’s QB draft is strong too. However, like I said to MJ, Grier and Ross supposedly attended 4 Alabama games and 1 Oregon Ducks game (Herbert). At least until his hip injury, Ross and the Dolphins were in love with Tua. I told MJ I still think we take him. Go Fins.

Jimmy really hit it on the Ireland part. I never even thought of it. Funny though, Ireland is killing it now and so is Spielman who he replaced! Jimmy is far higher on Tua than I am… as I said to Ralph above, I’d rather trade up to get Burrown than Draft Tua at #5 because I think the 5th pick will never have its value with Tua due to injury. I am big on trading back… but some of these Top 5 prospects look special… I’m starting to get that paralysis by analysis thing. Can you imagine how it feels to be the guy making the actual picks!!! Intense, Stephen! Must be such a high! I am like you preparing to suck up the Tua pick…
