Rumors Have Alvin Kamara on Phins Radar… Nah!

Alvin Kamara is the prototypical modern running back

Lately, any time a big name is on the trade block the Phins get instantly linked as an interested partner.   Running back Alvin Kamara is the new name attached to Miami. While Kamara has been nothing short of amazing over his three year career, this is much ado about nothing.

Still, Alvin Kamara is a star and the possibilities are intriguing.

Kamara has a combined 4,476 yards from scrimmage and a total of 37 touchdowns! As the ultimate duel threat, any team in the league would be lucky to have his services. The reason Kamara is on the trading block is because he wants a new contract and the mega-money that comes with it. With both sides far apart on compensation, the Saints are open to a trade because in the worst case scenario they want to get something instead of losing him to Free Agency with nothing in return.  Of course, there’s a good chance a long-term agreement will be reached. But if not, the Saints will open the bidding with at least a 1st Round pick.

A huge new contract along with a 1st Round pick is a steep price

All these accolades automatically link the Phins and Kamara because they still have four picks in first two rounds of the 2021 Draft. Also, the Dolphins are in the rebuilding phase, so all pay per head review services agree that adding a Pro Bowl dual threat running back would go a long way towards getting back on a winning track. Add in that a young QB’s best friend is his running game and how critical it is for Tua to succeed, Kamara would be his perfect safety net.

All of the above does make a trade for Kamara very tempting.

But, the Dolphins had a chance to draft one of the top running backs in this draft… and passed. Could it have been that they didn’t value those running backs as high as other positions of need? Maybe it was because they didn’t think this crop of running backs was as good as advertised?

I think it’s more likely the first reason. Similar to Belichick, Flores views most running backs as a dime a dozen with the real value being O-linemen…

So, Flores selling the farm for Kamara doesn’t sound right.

Also, Miami traded for a young running back in Matt Breida and signed FA Jordan Howard on the cheapOne would think Miami will hold off from making a mega-trade for a running back. I figure the Phins will see how Breida and Howard play before spending big on another running back. While Kamara is far more talented, maybe one of these two can be a cheaper option, while bringing solid production. Since Flores dumped Kalen Ballage, the Phins appear to believe in Brieda, Jordan, and Myles Gaskin enough to run with them this season.

Kamara is talented, but too costly

Of all the running backs in the league, Kamara is the one I’m most inclined to trade for. He can do it all and would be Tua’s most important weapon. Also, Kamara is likely a better option than any back in the 2021 Draft. But, in the end, I don’t see Miami doing more than dipping their toe in trade talks for Kamara.

It’s been a crazy year so far, I guess anything is possible.

What are the rest Miami Dolphins News fans’ thoughts about a potential trade for Kamara?
