Ravens were a battered team and a dim reflection of their Super Bowl roster, but with their last 12 contests coming down to a score or less, they are no slouches either – and today was no difference. Miami came out with a game plan and stuck with it. The entire team and coaching staff seemed calmer and more poised than they had in several games. With Baltimore boasting a top 10 run defense, it was thought Miami would work the pass to find victory. Instead, the Dolphins ran at the teeth of the beast and broke them off. They handed the ball off on the first play and never stopped feeding Miller the rock. The running game and its success was the foundation on which this victory was laid.
As for passing, Tannehill had a “statistically poor” game throwing for under 50%, but he made two huge throws, a play action for a TD and a 3rd and long at the end for a first down, that went a long way towards the victory. But, it was one stat that has a zero in the column which was his biggest contribution – zero turnovers and zero boneheaded plays. Tannehill played smart and within the context of the game. He demonstrated that play action and a mobile platform are very useful tools for him. There were two missed passes that he’d of like to have back, but overall his performance was what was needed, and he delivered.
Defense generated big play after big play. Warts and all, they were stout inside and brought tremendous pressure which generated turnovers and crucial stops. The defense seemed to feed on the run game (and the shortened game it provided) and was the deciding factor in the contest. Enough can’t be said about Suh, Vernon, Jones and the continuing rise of Phillips. Also, the secondary had several nice deflections and did their part on a soggy field.
With the departure of Lazor, Campbell was “allowed” to get his vision portrayed on the field for for the first time in 5 weeks. It paid off and seems that the Dolphins relish and thrive under a run heavy, defense driven game plan. Now, it’s not to say under this format they are contenders for the crown, not even the best sportsbook software providers in the world would take that bet, but both offense and defense seem more stable and poised when the backbone is rushing. This was merely the first battery of tests to see if Lazor and his influence was a governor on the engine of this team.
