Run The Ball
This might end up falling on deaf ears because it’s clear that this coaching staff does not want to run the ball. But, I’m saying it anyway: Run the &@$# Football! In 2 games the Dolphins have run the ball a dismal 34 times, which is third-worst in the league, with the Eagles (33) and Lions (32) the only teams with fewer attempts. It is no surprise that those two teams who were both expected to be above average this year are now both 0-2.
While most of the sports betting software fans around the world will agree that the NFL has transformed into a pass-happy league, the good teams have a balanced offense. The Dolphins must put more effort into running the ball because throwing the ball 62% of the time – which is what they are doing – is not working. Sure Tannehill has the 6th most passing yards in the league (585 yards) and has a QB rating of 101.7, but the Dolphins are still a pedestrian 1-1. Stats are for geeks and fantasy football fans, whereas the only true stat that counts is whether the team wins or loses the game.

Unfortunately, the Dolphins have two key injuries going into the Bills game that will make it even harder for them to establish a running game. First, Branden Albert is listed as doubtful for the game because of a hamstring injury. Albert was never 100% when he started the season, and as we said before it would have been much wiser to keep him out of the lineup until he was 100%. The problem is when a player is not 100%, then they open themselves up to either re-injuring themselves or having a brand new injury, which is what happened in Albert’s case.
The other injury that affects the running game is Lamar Miller, who is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. Miller had a nagging ankle injury last season, and it appears that it has happened again. With Ajayi still on the IR recovering from a rib injury, the Dolphins are already thin at running back. Williams has the ability to step in and handle a heavier load, but after Williams, there’s really no one else. Hopefully, Miller can play, which most sports betting fans believe he will, but if Miami does not run the ball it really does not matter if he is healthy to play or not.
Clearly throwing the ball 62% of the time is not working, so why not at least give the running game a whirl. Why not start the first offensive series of the game running on both first and second down. Give Rex Ryan and his defense a bit of his own medicine. Even if the Dolphins are not successfully running the ball, at least it keeps the opposing defense honest and keeps them guessing whether or not you are going to run or pass the ball. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans’ thoughts about the ‘Phins lack of a run game?

I may be in the minority because I agree with Jimmy. They can run some tosses to Miller and with his speed and a TE in front of him at least have a chance. You can’t just give up on the run. Miller had some good runs vs the skins at the end of the game to seal the win. Another way would be some screens to the backs. Also Tannehill is at his best running bootlegs and getting outside the pocket which we need more of. As far as throwing deep it won’t happen unless the line protects him. WR and QB can be great but if the qb is under constant pressure it will never happen
I agree Travis we need to take advantage of Miller’s speed and get him to the outside, and also take advantage of Tannehill’s legs. I love the bootleg idea because he is a duel threat QB, which makes him very dangerous on those types of plays

Yes the ultimate decision was Tannebaum’s to make on whether to sign Mathis or not. But If the coach would have been on his face screaming he wants Mathis, we would have found a way. He signed for 2 million in Denver, plus incentives. We could have done better than that. We have almost 17 million Cap space now after releasing the 2 kickers. Why are we saving it ??
Yes next year Vernon and Miller are free agents and we want to keep them. But what if this year we finish at 4 and 12 because we did not have a decent left guard, and our whole offensive line collapses.
Miller will not get 600 to 700 yards this year because there will not be holes for him to run in. We passed on signing the consensus best Guard in the league for the last 2 years. THE BEST.
Armando Salguero from the Miami Herald reported before, that Philbin did not want Mathis because Mathis is unruly and vociferous in the locker room. Is that qualities that prevent us from coaching him (Think not for a good coach) Think Harbaugh would have done it different ?
As a matter of fact it was rumored that Philbin is the one that said he did not want Mathis, and was willing to go with Thomas, feeling Thomas had improved tremendously. Well we now see that that is not the case. The last 2 games Thomas allowed his man through 9 times resulting in 2 sacks, 5 knockdowns and 2 scrambles and hurries. Plus he created NO holes for our running backs. Miller is the type of player that excels only after he passes the line of scrimmage because of his speed. He is not good at breaking tackles from the defensive linemen. You play the game for this season not next. God forbid Miller and Vernon have career ending injuries, then what do we do with our extra 17 million ?
Tannebaum definitely shares the blame, but can you see a good coach lobbying against signing a good player that you desperately need.
Plus next year we have 3 extra compensatory picks in the third round anyway. So our team will get cheaper as we draft more talent and let go of some veterans. No Sir the only reason we did not sign Mathis is Philbin is afraid of him. He just doesn’t know how to deal with strong personality people because he doesn’t have a strong personality.
Philbin needs to go. We would be better off firing him NOW and putting Bill Lazor as our interim coach. See how he performs as head coach.
It is not as simple as that
First of all we have a weak offensive line. They cannot open holes for our running game. Dallas Thomas is a total flop. His man always gets through to rush our QB or knock him down or sack him. awful pass protection. Just awful. I don’t know about Douglas (our right guard), run blocking whether it is good or not. Not having Albert at 100% also hurts the running game but not having him at all just about nixes any chance to run the ball because Fox is not a good run blocker and thus defenses know that they can load the other side and stop the run because they almost don’t need a linebacker to stop us on our left side. It is a broken record but the biggest mistake the Dolphins made was not signing Mathis when he fell in our laps. How can Philbin not fought to get him signed is beyond me. Was he that blinded by Thomas?. Is he that bad a talent evaluator?, or is it that he was afraid of Mathis and lobbied against him because he is not a yes man. (Either way it’s Phibin’s fault.)We need a strong coach not an administrator. Is it time to try Billy Turner at left Guard ?? Is there anyone retired that we can bring in ? Can we trade for a Guard ?
Now compound that, with the fact that Miller has an ankle injury and Ajayi is out for quite a spell. So with only Williams at full speed, this becomes an almost impossible task.
Thirdly the play calling and coaching leaves us to wonder if we have become a one dimensional team and thus opposing teams can load up against us.
The problem is compounded with Tannehill not having a deep ball threat. Don’t know if it is receivers fault or inaccuracy in the long ball, but defenses know that they can move up on us because we only complete the short to intermediate passes. No long passes.
That allows teams to look for the short passes first.
So far this season we have only faced below average teams with below average defenses, yet we have struggled. We can expect that to change from now on we face tough defenses. We will be really tested now with Buffalo as they have one of the top defenses. So it’s a combination of bad decisions at the front office, and extremely bad coaching at both ends offense and defense, plus some bad luck in having injuries to key players. (Albert, Parker, Miller, Ayaji) all on offense.
On defense not having Delmas is really hurting us. Aikens is not that good a replacement, and left corner is a disaster for us. Most all completions are against our left corner. (McCain needs to play much better if we are going to win) And we really need a better middle linebacker to help stop the run, since the front 4 don’t seem to be able to do that with any consistency.
I predict that by week 5 we will all be calling for Philbin to be fired. we will be 1-4 and those are the games we were supposed to win.
I am even more ticked off because as a loyal Dolphins fan I already bought tickets to go to London, paid for the hotel, and the airline tickets, and all with the expectation that this year finally we would be contenders. (almost 3 grand) Yes I am a season ticket holder. but regret to say I am tired of seeing our team not making the playoffs.
I should have listened to many of you who said that as long as Philbin is the coach we are not going anywhere.
you blame philbin for not getting mathis. wrong! it’s tannenbaum. he make the decisions.
agree on everything Ralph, but even in a bad situation and especially through game tape coaches will see what Williams is made off…will see – even if it’s a one yard gain that should have been zero – Damien has a chance. I am looking for his work against the odds and in tight quarters and bearing the load. All of these situations will reveal what he is made of and that (aside from a win) is what I’m looking forward to most. He will be here next year even though Philly might not.
I agree…I have never liked Philbin – even made a mocking vid of my distaste last season – but have hoped to be wrong. But, his social awkwardness and zero charisma isn’t even balanced by football acumen. It’s a shame that now we have a good talent evaluation/ acquisition FO, but no one to coach it. I am still excited for this week because I have a strong belief that Damien Williams is very good and might even be a minor star. Loved him since I saw his first carry…this game he will get to showcase himself albert with a terrile RG and a back up LT- BUT this is his chance and since he’ll be here after this regime is good I am looking forward to seeing what he is made of…
This is just another example of the stubbornly narrow mindedness and cutsie thinking eminating from Philbin. Since Philbin’s arrival, Fins have been anemic in the run game.
Simply look at the fact there is no FB on this roster. See goal line offensive scheme has Tanny in the shotgun with a single back.
Philbin has transformed this team into a limp wristed, pinky ringed wine-and-cheese diva.
On the other hand, look at the winning teams in this league who feature a power running game AND a vertical passing attach.
There is just no denying this.
