The Ryan Tannehill era is over and Miami managed a couple of picks in return
Most thought Ryan Tannehill would either be the Miami Dolphins quarterback for the 2019 Season or cut with nothing to show for his leaving except a $13 million dollar Cap hit.
The belief that Miami could get anything in a trade for Tannehill was all but a pipe dream.
You can bet with the pay per head bookie sites like AcePerHead.com I’ve never been so happy to be wrong.
Given Joe Flacco was had for a 4th and Keenum along with a 7th for a 6th Round Pick, this deal is a minor triumph for this new regime.
Patience through the process has paid off in this case.
Miami is sending Tannehill and a 6th Round pick for a 4th and 7th Round Pick in return from Tennesse.
Not too shabby at all!
Normally a Cap starved Dolphins team looking to upgrade by spending big money in Free Agency would have had to cut Tannehill quickly to free up space and missed out on the trade. But, the combination of all the cuts Chris Grier made and the lack of investment in Free Agency gave the Dolphins the ability to hold on till a desperate team came calling.
Fiscal responsibility is key in both life and modern football.
This small victory should offer a modicum of hope to fans tentative about believing in the process that the Dolphins are using.
This 4th offers a decent chance to get a solid contributor in return. Is the compensation equal to the 1st Round Pick and the time invested into acquiring and training Tannehill? No. But this regime didn’t draft him and managed a quality pick in return for a box of rocks.
Currently, the Dolphins have nine picks at their disposal for the 2019 Draft. I expect that they’ll have a few more coming with compensatory picks. That’s a lot of ammo… if their aim is good.
As I’ve said before, the outcome is unknown, but at least this plan is coherent.
Say what you want about Tannehill… he failed but gave his all for the team
Tannehill took one hell of a beating his first couple of years. He had to grow up in a plastic bubble under Philbin who didn’t want to hurt his feelings with competition and pressure. This is like taking seeds, putting in a bag of poop, flushing it down the toilet and wondering why it didn’t grow into a garden.
Water and fertilizer been given for sure… but the gardener was a complete jackass.
Now, I’m not saying Tannehill would ever have been more than what he was. There are critical issues in his game for sure. But consider Marcus Mariota, nearly the same player, generating a better outcome due to a better situation.
Between the rough start and injuries, Tannehill must have swallowed nine black cats before coming to South Florida.
Some are calling him a bum. I am glad he’s gone, but a bum is someone of a poor character who doesn’t work hard. Tannehill wasn’t that. He was just an average QB asked to be an elite in a dysfunctional environment.
Let’s say goodbye and thanks for the service… Hopefully, we get a better QB this time… and a better regime to support him. Go Phins!!!
