A Safe Pick

Even though the NFL draft is still roughly 2 and a half months away, there is going to be increased speculation and excitement over what the Miami Dolphins are going to do with their first-round pick. I may sound like a broken record, but I can not stress enough that the Phins need a high caliber day 1 starter. They can not afford to draft a player like Dion Jordan, that can’t get on the field.

The best pay per head reviews in the world are saying that one of the Dolphins’ biggest needs is a true middle linebacker. The free-agency market has some decent middle linebackers that will hit the market like David Harris, and Brandon Spikes, but both are mainly two-down linebackers, whereas the Dolphins should be looking for a three-down linebacker. One player in the upcoming draft that could fit the bill for the Phins is Eric Kendricks from UCLA.

Kendricks is everything you would want in a true middle linebacker, a sideline-to-sideline player that has a nose for the football, can make impact plays, and is very good in pass coverage. In 2014 he won the Butkus Award for best linebacker in college, and rarely do you see a middle linebacker with his skills become a bust. In 2014 he had a whopping 149 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, 2 passes broken up, 3 interceptions, and a forced fumble. He is the type of player that a team can build their defense around.

There is a lot of talent in this upcoming draft, so in terms of talent he may not be the 14th best player in the draft, so if Miami does draft him, some critics may consider this a reach with that draft spot. However, this guy is exactly the type of player that Miami is looking for at the middle line-backing position. Kendricks can step in day 1 and become a fixture in Miami’s defense for the next 10+ years. He is also a safe pick and fills a huge need on the team, and should definitely be on the board when Miami comes on the clock at the number 14th spot. He actually makes too much sense for Miami not to pick him. If Miami wants to get cute, they could trade down and most likely still be able to draft Kendricks in the 20’s. I know we have other needs, and other sexy needs like a wide receiver but a player of Kendricks’ caliber at a position that we desperately need to fill might be way too tempting to pass up. What do the rest of Miami Dolphins fans think about drafting Kendricks in the first round?
