Scheme & Process Only Matters in ‘Magical’ New England

The culture that made the Pats successful could only be possible in the magical land of New England

From nearly everything I read from the sportswriters, Brian Flores is either an idiot or a liar because the Miami Dolphins are ‘tanking’ in 2019… despite his protests to the contrary. The very same writers who have opined ad nauseam on the greatness of the New England Patriots culture for decades are now saying that the same process getting installed in South Florida is a dud, disaster, or purposeful attempt to get the 1st Overall pick.

The reality must be that the ‘wondrous culture’ of the Patriots can only grow in the magical land of New England.

It surely isn’t the actual process or scheme itself. No, siree! And the preference for intelligent, disciplined, and tough players over raw talent, even if it shockingly shatters norms, is better off lip service outside of Foxborough. Come on, talent at all costs is the key. Spend, spend, spend, except up in New England. Strict adherence of Cap responsibility, focus on draft pick acquisition, and player development is a road to ruin in all but one locale.

Belichick and his staff maintaining positional flexibility, scheme diversity, quality game planning, and half-time adjustments is just a shiny cherry on top of the supernatural reason for the Patriots success.

Avalon, El Dorado, Camelot, and Shangri-La ain’t got nuttin’ on New England!

This extra-large helping of sarcasm is meant to highlight a point… not the reality of the Dolphins situation. Without even one game of film to examine, no one can say what the reality is. Soon we’ll get an indication. But as of today, it’s anyone’s guess.

The second reality is that this particular process (in its major themes) is one that’s tried and true.

Don Shula, Jimmy Johnson, and Bill Belichick all dogmatically held to their process and became legends. While slightly different in theme (and the fiscal aspects and focus on draft picks as the NFL evolved), these coaches shared many core principles for their teams: character and intelligence as top traits, along with toughness, discipline, strong defense, and a run game.

They all bucked the trends in some fashion and took over bad teams.

Yes, only the cream of the crop in Head Coaching can make this type of process succeed when applied unswervingly. The lessers must use cheats along the way to compensate. Still, the bottom line: You can’t fault the process in of itself...

… And you can’t fault the coaching or a team till you’ve seen them in a live game.

So far, too many writers have quickly devolved into calling Flores a sell-out, company man, idiot, and now liar… even though they have prayed, across multiple Dolphins regimes, for the Phins to have a team that operates like New England.

Has it ever crossed their minds that Flores might be able to navigate the path of brilliance? If not, why? Yes, the road less traveled usually ends in disaster, but is it too much to allow him even one step before the mockery begins?

It’s a sure sign of a cynical age.

I’m all for riding Frankenstein out of town with torches (Philbin and Gase) once the monster strangles the child (Phins), but not before. Maybe all this derision of Grier and Flores is deserved (that’s the most likely scenario). But, then again maybe not. That’s why they play the game. No?

The Ravens have destroyed the Dolphins over the last decade by winning 7 out of the last 8 games. Their wins have been marked by physical and mental domination of the Phins.

The pay per head services sites like AcePerHead.com, have the Ravens at -7 in Miami, so the expectation is another aqua mauling. Writers, let us get one game in before we pass judgment, soup to nuts, on this regime. You never know, Flores might be a man of character… and a quality Head Coach. Maybe the ‘Rob Ninkovich’ effect can translate? I say if you are going to write about it, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Predicting the Dolphins success and getting it wrong is one type of eating crow… but assassinating a good man’s character in print and being wrong is whole other level. Go Phins!!!
