Scrimmage Notes
On Friday night the Miami Dolphins had an offense versus defense live scrimmage, to give the players more of a chance to get into a game type frame of mind. It was also great for the fans, with over 12,000 people coming out to show their support for their beloved Aqua and Orange.
There were a lot of solid plays made throughout the scrimmage by multiple players, which was a good sign of the increased talent level on this team. Ndamukong Suh was his dominate self, with a disruptive first series of the game, where he burst through the line of scrimmage and took down Miller for a 12 yard loss. Then on the next play he leveled Damien Williams from behind on a short pass. Suh also had some false starts, but this has been a regular occurrence, because of his extremely aggressive playing style. There is no doubt that Suh is going to be very fun to watch this season.
Another defensive player that was making plays was rookie Bobby McCain. He had a spectacular interception against Tannehill, when he was covering Landry in the back of the endzone. In addition McCain also had two pass deflections on passes thrown his way. McCain has been coming on strong lately, and with the Dolphins recently moving Brice McCain to the outside corner back position, there is a strong possibility that Bobby McCain can claim the starting nickel back position. Jamar Taylor who was the initial front runner to start opposite of Grimes, has played decent, but has not stood out as much as the two McCain’s.
Tannehill played decent, and showed some nice touch on the ball, and finished the night completing 11 of 17 passes for 101 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 2 Interceptions. Tannehill has actually done a very good job of not throwing interceptions during training camp, (only had 2 up to this point) but was unfortunately picked off twice in the scrimmage. Tannehill’s highlight of the night was a beautifully thrown 26 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron. Cameron and Tannehill hooked up for another goal line 3 yard touchdown, and it was great to see those two beginning to develop a chemistry together. This is important, because Lazor likes to heavily incorporate Tight Ends into his passing game, and the Dolphins are definitely looking to improve in the Red Zone, and having solid chemistry with the Tight Ends is a great way to accomplish that goal.
Lastly one other player that has been turning heads all camp, and was equally impressive in the scrimmage was running back LaMichael James. Most football gambling fans would agree, that if James continues to play like this, then the Dolphins are definitely going to go into the season with 4 running backs on their roster. (Miller, Williams, Ajayi, and James) James finished the scrimmage with 63 total yards and a touchdown. He gained 41 of his yards on the ground on 9 carries for a 4.5 yards per carry average, and he added another 22 yards thru the air on two catches, with one going for a touchdown.
James was a great player in college at Oregon, but has yet to made his mark in the NFL. Sometimes players just take time to develop, and need to be in the right system in order to truly reach their potential, and considering that Lazor’s offensive philosophy is strongly influenced by Jame’s former college coach Chip Kelly, there is a chance that James may finally be able to utilize his unique talents in the NFL.
