Sentinel Reporting Trade Is Near: Albert For Thomas

Reports are brewing about Albert for Thomas

Reports are brewing about a trade of Albert for Thomas

If this trade happens it would be a nice score for the Dolphins

Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel is reporting that the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Miami Dolphins are near a trade involving Branden Albert and Julius Thomas.

Thomas, the former Broncos Tight End, has been a bit of an let down for the Jaguars. But, let’s be clear, his fortunes could very well change given a new coaching.

First, Albert was going to get cut and bring nothing. If this trade happens, Miami will fill a hole without wasting a bullet in the draft or chasing one in Free Agency. His contract will certainly have limited guaranteed money or be front loaded to allow his release in 2018. So, Thomas will be on a prove it season.

Second, even in Jacksonville he managed 46 Rec, 455 yards with a 9.9 Avg., and 5 T.D.’s in his first season, and a near mirror image of Sims stats in 2016. In comparison to Sims, that’s better or equal production with a lesser cast. In no way will this be a bust move, if it happens… and, it could turn out to be a excellent addition if Adam Gase can continue his ways of making Tight Ends blossom under his tutelage.

A trade for a TE would be one less check on a long list of needs

From a financial standpoint, Thomas has a contract that runs through 2019 and $3 million of his $7.1 million 2017 salary is already guaranteed. According to multiple sources, as per the Sentinel, both Albert and Thomas are willing to restructure their contract to make this happen. That’s a good thing because the back-end of his contract is bloated with the final two season adding up to near 20 million

Albert likes the weather and wouldn’t need to totally relocate, and Thomas would get a coach who he is familiar with and who does well with TE’s. So, for both this would be a good deal.

The only draw back is that Thomas has never played a full 16 game season. The last two season he he has 12 and 9 games respectively. As long as Miami can structure it so they can get out of it after the 2017 season will a limited hit, I’m fine with this move.

I say take the chance, so you don’t have to make the hard commit in FA or expend a blue chip pick in the draft.

With so much in need on defense and the Offensive Line, I’d like to see the temptation of not draft a TE in the first round. Give me defense in the draft and Guards in Free Agency…please! Go Fins!!!

Yea buddy. Funny, we both transformed, I will be feeling quite comfortable if we take care of the guard positions. I can see one pre draft and on after if needed. Would be nice to see both taken care of pre draft.

With only 4 picks in the draft, I can see us trading back to pick up a extra pick or 2. Lets hope that Qbs slip and we have a partner.

Good luck to Big Albert. Fine man, player, teammate. Time was right for both. Good luck big fella

It is a nice start to the off season and its only Feb. Sure (hope) there is more to come.

Thomas just adds to this already potent attack. Re-sign Stills, add 2 guards and the offense is lock and loaded, top 5 potential from the start.

The 2 glaring needs this very moment are guards and Lbers, 2 each preferably. Sure, could look at a DE or CB, but not to bad off considering cap space and options. For some reason I see a DT being signed or drafted earlier than expected.

One thing about this FO, they make for a exciting off season.

Exciting times to be a Dolphins Fan. All for the right reasons.

Yeah, they make it exciting, but in the right way. The old regime made it exciting with big splashes and failure all around. Still think they need to extend their wins a bit by draft a bit better in later rounds, but overall they are approaching their team building concept with winning strategies and tactics. I do think DT will come earlier than expected… I see MLB, DE and LG as the prime spots that must be filled with good + talent. I would put DE in with LB and LG as critical. DE seems to be an easier route at 22. From what I’m reading LB are being sought at a higher rate than DE’s. So ut might be wise to get a LB in FA and DE in the draft… alsthough, some good G’s are hovering around 22 as well.

…wow, that was quick …done deal …Albert for Thomas …no dead money …incentive laden contract that is very cap friendly to fins

…Thomas has twice as much experience in Gase’s offense as any other fins starter and was highly productive in it with Manning at QB …no way that TH doesn’t do a better job with Thomas than Bortles did …the fins receiving corp just became a top five threat imnsho

…like Sims but this deal makes him expendable in FA if the bidding gets too high …Thomas is a real threat in the red zone, teams won’t be able to double team our WRs there as much …don’t get me wrong, love to keep Sims as well but its now no longer a must …he’s a blocker more than a receiver …Thomas is good at both

…wish Albert well in Jacksonville …he was a very solid player for us when not injured

…now go find us TWO high caliber starting guards …and please, please tell us TH’s knee is going to be fine …get those final pieces and we’re looking at the realistic possibility of a top five offense

…still need a bu center in FA or lower draft round as Pouncey insurance

…but damn, what a way to start the off season with a bang!

…I could learn to like this FO, eh …yes Dunner, I actually said that 🙂

…otoh, the Stills numbers keep rising …instead of a 7-8 mil py contract, its looking like he could get into the 10+ range …which makes resigning him a lot more dodgy …but TH really likes him and who would become our the deep threat? …so far, neither Parker nor Caroo look like it

…wish Caroo had shown more bite as a rookie …make the Stills question an easy one …but lots of bark, little bite, and if he doesn’t produce in his 2nd year, his draft cost will weigh heavily against the FO

Yeah, that’s the number I posted a while back…I believe a few people called me ridiculous…well, I am (Jimmy not so much), but in this case I was right — wished I wasn’t.

It wasn’t Albert for Thomas. From what I’m reading, it’s two separate deals. It seems to be a swap of late round picks…not sure how late though. But, Thomas cut his price tag wayyy down from what I’m reading. I think it’s a real good move in the sense it fills a hole, offers a shot at good value, and frees them up to not be forced to draft a TE or pay big in FA…I too hope this is a trend.

Def, need another center. I like Urbick though and he could fill the role for the year. He is an excellent second level player hat is a big addition. He can play any of the interior roles and that is big… who would have saw that one 😉

  • Lemmus

…what’s not to like, we were going to cut Albert and eat the dead money

…instead, we get a needed TE whom Gase knows well on a prove it contract

…and some needed change for the OL and LB FA markets

Was getting more familiar with the FA G’s…some good FA’s at RG, but only Lang is the LG on the top shelf. This will force Miami to be a little more wise in their selections.
