Sieler & Achane Injured & Howard a Colt!

The Miami Dolphins are facing an early wave of adversity as training camp winds down, with key players De’Von Achane and Zach Sieler sidelined by injuries. Both are expected to be ready for the season, with hopes that they’ll be at full strength for the Week 1 opener against the Indianapolis Colts, who recently signed a former Dolphins star. Longtime defensive standout Xavien Howard has joined Indianapolis and will face his former team in Week 1, adding plenty of intrigue and spice to the matchup.

It’s unclear how much Howard has left in the tank, but having Austin Jackson, Sieler, and Achane available would be a huge boost for Miami. Howard will certainly be motivated, and the Dolphins will need all their key players firing to handle the revenge factor he brings.

Achane and Sieler are certainly big pieces for the Phins!

Running back Devon Achane, who has emerged as a dynamic option in Miami’s backfield, suffered a lower-body injury during practice this week. Achane has been a versatile weapon, combining speed, vision, and elusiveness, and his ability to contribute both in the running game and as a receiving option out of the backfield has been a key factor for Miami’s offense. While the team has not released a full timetable for his return, any extended absence puts additional pressure on rookie Ollie Gordon II and backup Jaylen Wright to carry the short-yardage and explosive-play load.

McDaniel said it could be days or weeks before his return and with only three weeks before the opener, it does bring some concern.

Also, defensive end Zach Sieler is sidelined after suffering a minor knee injury during a joint practice with the Lions. Sieler has been a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ defensive front, providing both edge pressure and interior run-stopping ability. While the injury is not considered season-ending, missing practice reps could impact the defensive rotation early in the season. The Dolphins’ depth at defensive line will be tested, with players like Jordan Phillips and rookie Kenneth Grant needing to step up to maintain pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Xavien Howard returns to the NFL! Judon coming?

There is some hope the Phins can sign former star edge/linebacker Matthew Judon as the team hosted him today. Are the Dolphins kicking the tires on him to offset a longer timetable with Sieler or to simply bolster the defense? I don’t know the ‘why’ or if we’ll eventually sign Judon, but this is certainly something to keep an eye on! But it does seem by all indications that he’ll be a Dolphin on a 1-year deal.

Compounding Miami’s preseason challenges is the departure of veteran cornerback Xavien Howard. Howard, who has been one of the franchise’s most consistent performers in the secondary over the past decade, signed with the Indianapolis Colts, the Dolphins’ Week 1 opponent.

Howard’s ability to read quarterbacks, lockdown receivers, and generate turnovers could make him a concern, if he isn’t too far past his expiration date. Even if diminished, you can bet with the best pay per head that Howard still has playmaking ability. How has his knees healed in his year off is a huge factor. Week 1 matchup against the Colts takes on added intrigue, as Howard returns to face his former teammates, providing a storyline that will be watched closely by fans and analysts alike.

Despite these setbacks, the Dolphins remain optimistic about their depth and resilience. Head coach Mike McDaniel emphasized the importance of next-man-up mentality, highlighting the opportunity for younger players to step into larger roles. We’ll see if these early trials may test the Dolphins’ depth and cohesion. On the flip side, they also present an opportunity for emerging stars to stake their claim. Fans will be watching closely to see how Miami navigates these challenges while preparing for a pivotal Week 1 showdown with the Colts.
