Phins can find a better option at running back in the draft

The Miami Dolphins are projected to have around $28 million in cap space with room to grow. One position that’s already being talked about that could be improved in Free Agency is the running back. The talk now links the Dolphins to Green Bay’s running back Aaron Jones, who is set to become a free agent. I’m hoping this doesn’t end up the case and the Phins find relief at running back through the draft.

Now Jones isn’t a slouch

Jones has been a beast behind a very good Packers O-line. Just in the last two seasons, he has a combined 2,188 rushing yards, 25 rushing touchdowns. Jones has excelled in the passing game as well with 96 receptions for 829 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. Clearly, he is a dual-threat and close to a top 5 running back in the NFL.

However, wherever Jones goes, it’s a sure bet with the best football betting software like Ace Pay Per Head.com that he’ll get paid… and paid big. The initial estimates are around $14.5 million per year, which would be top money for a running back.

Now there are a few reasons why I would prefer and think Miami will wait until the draft to get a running back.

One reason is that Coach Flores came from New England and they never put an emphasis on running backs. Running back by committee and never paying top dollar for a free agent running back is New England’s motto. Also, in Flores’s first two years, Miami has taken some flyers on the running back position. They’ve hit pretty well too considering how poor the run blocking has been.

Phins never broke the bank on the position even though this has been a need since he came to Miami. So I doubt Flores will all of a sudden change that philosophy to pay big bucks for a running back… but anything is possible.

Good runner or product of a good O-line

Jones had the luxury of running behind a very good offensive line in Green Bay and playing with one of the best QB’s of all time in Aaron Rodgers. He will have neither of these luxuries in Miami. So, it’s difficult to beleive he’ll reach those type of stats if Miami signs him to a big contract.

With 4 picks in the first two rounds, Miami can find a running back because every year a good one is had in these rounds. In truth, Miami has the firepower to select the top-rated running back in the whole draft… if they wanted.

This path would give Miami a young, talented running back on a cheap rookie contract. That sounds a whole lot better than older and far more expensive. Even if they went deeper into the draft and found a slightly less talented back for a far smaller sticker price…

… I’d much prefer that!

It’s a much better strategy for the Dolphins to use that Cap space on positions that they value more instead… and one that isn’t so easily ground up like a running back.
