So Far So Good

With Free Agency in full force this week, and a lot of the biggest names signed; now is a good time to do a quick evaluation on the Miami Dolphins, and new GM Dennis Hickey. Personally I have liked everything the Dolphins and Hickey have done so far. It has been methodically efficient, and on paper it appears our team has gotten better.

Our most glaring need was a left tackle; the two best available free agents where Eugene Monroe and Brandon Albert. The Dolphins have been enamored with Albert since last off season, so it was no surprise that they went all in on him. He is a huge upgrade for a team that allowed 58 sacks, and did a pitiful job creating space for their running backs. The Dolphins are also currently interested in Rams guard Shelley Smith, however he has quite a few other suitors. Either way it appears that the Dolphins will try to at least sign one more veteran guard or tackle, and that is a good thing. On a pleasant side note, the Dolphins miraculously traded Jonathan Martin for an undisclosed late round draft pick to the 49ers. That was a pretty slick move, considering there was no chance in this world that Martin was going to be a Dolphin again, and that another team was willing to give more then a bag of flaming shit for a player that was going to be released anyway.

The Dolphins and Hickey also made a solid pick up in signing DT Earl Mitchell, who can arguably be considered the unsung hero of the Houston Texans Defensive line, which featured All-Pro J.J. Watt. Mitchell lead all DT with tackles last season, and runs a very fast 4.80 40 time for his massive size. Even though the Dolphins lost Soliai, they replaced him with a younger, faster player, with a higher ceiling. In addition the Phins were able to resign Randy Starks, which gives the Dolphins a very excellent inside defensive line rotation with Starks, Mitchell and Odrick.

Lastly the Dolphins addressed their secondary by resigning pro bowl corner back Brent Grimes to a long term deal, and added hard hitting safety Louis Delmas to replace in house free agent Chris Clemons. As long as Delmas can stay healthy then it is safe to say that this is an upgrade as well. The Dolphins also decided to release Dimitri Patterson, which saved them over $5 million, and also let Nolan Carroll sign with the Eagles. It has been noted that the Phins are currently kicking the tires on corner backs Tarrell Brown and Walter Thurmond.

All in all Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans would say that the Dolphins have identified their weaknesses from last season, and have decided not to waste any time in addressing them. Running back is another obvious area of concern, however sources are saying that Hickey prefers to find running backs in the draft, which is of no surprise since he helped draft Doug Martin in Tampa Bay. This is only the first week of the off season but it appears that our GM position has also been upgraded as well.
