We are heading into the exciting part of free-agency and the draft part, and with this comes many rumors and reportings.
Some of these rumors have no weight what so ever, but others do have some truth to them. The latest rumor is that Phins’ receiver Rishard Matthews is requesting to be released or traded.
What really does not make sense about this is that the Dolphins just parted ways with two receivers, Hartline and Gibson, and most of the best pay per head reviews are wagering that the Dolphins will also part ways with Mike Wallace through a trade or by releasing him. Why would a player who is deeper on the depth chart want to leave the team after 2 players ahead of him on the depth chart have now been released? One would think that after these organizational player moves, that Matthews would now have a better chance of getting more playing time.
One possible thing that could make this rumor have some truth to it, is that it is widely known that Philbin and Matthews have had some issues with each other in the past. Clearly that would mean that Matthews still has some animosity towards Philbin. It is a shame that these two men can not get along, because when Matthews replaced Gibson in 2013 he did a very good job. Even last year with his extremely limited opportunities he produced 2 touchdowns and made plays.
The organization has responded saying that they have no plans to trade or release Matthews, which I believe is the smart decision. Matthews is still young and still has one year remaining on his 4-year rookie contract, which includes a base salary of only $660,000 for 2015.
Philbin needs to have a sit down with Matthews so they can clear the air and settle their differences because Matthews has the talent and can help the team. Especially now after the Dolphins just got rid of two of the receivers, there is an obvious need for players to step up in that group because there is no guarantee that Miami will sign a wide receiver in free agency and there is no guarantee that even if they draft a wide receiver that he will be successful in the NFL. Matthews has been in the league for three years, and when he has had opportunities he has proved he can be productive. Matthews could at least provide some sort of stability and depth to a wide receiving group that is now entering next season with many questions and holes.
What does the rest of Phins news fans think the Dolphins should do about Matthews, and his rumored expression to leave the team?
