It was only a few months ago when the Dolphins had an off-season practice with the Carolina Panthers, and there were reports that Carolina was asking the Dolphins to turn down the gas on defense because our pass rush was too dominant for the Panthers offensive line. Fast forward to Super Bowl 50, the Panthers were just one game away from having an undefeated regular season, rolled there way through the playoffs, and made it to the Super Bowl. What is even a greater stick in the eye is that during that off-season joint practice, the Panthers lost there stud wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin for the entire season.
After those late summer practices, many Dolphins players and Miami Dolphins News fans were feeling pretty good that the team that was going to make a real playoff run. However, its painfully obvious now that the Panthers are the real deal, and even if they do not win the Super Bowl this season, they clearly look like a team that is built to be in the Championship picture for many years to come. The best pay per head reviews know the simple reason for it, Panthers have probably the best young QB in the league in Cam Newton.
Teams win championships – defense especially. However, the QB position is probably the most important position in all of the sports since now the NFL has made such a strong emphasis on the passing game. Look at the list of the last 12 Super Bowl match-ups and you’ll see a similar caliber of Quarterbacks that started those games. In the last 12 Super Bowls, there has only been one Super Bowl that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Ben Roethlisberger did not represent the starting QB for the AFC Conference, which was in 2013 when Joe Flacco led the Ravens to victory. Brady, Manning, and Roethlisberger are each going to be first ballot hall of fame QB’s as well, so it truly shows that in this day in age you need an elite QB if you want to win a championship.
Just look at this year’s match-up, Peyton Manning against Cam Newton. Manning may be playing in his last game, and he has one of the most decorated careers of any QB to ever play the game. Cam Newton is still a very young QB, having only played in 5 NFL seasons, but he has already proven himself as probably one of the best dual-threat QB’s to ever play the game. He will most likely easily win the 2015 NFL season MVP, and if he does lead the Panthers to victory in Super Bowl 50 this Sunday, then he will probably win the Super Bowl MVP as well. This game is a true changing of the guard with the veteran Manning passing the torch to the new era Cam Newton.
This leads to the multimillion-dollar question of whether Ryan Tannehill has skills and the ability to ever led the Dolphins to a Super Bowl? Tannehill does check a lot of boxes of what you want in a QB, however, he has zero playoff experience, rarely taken over a game and guided his team to victory. Tannehill will be entering his 5th season next year with his third different offensive coordinator – which is a stumbling block onto itself. Miami needs to straighten out their dysfunction and fill the talent chasm on the offensive line if Tannehill is to have a chance at the big strides he needs to make next season. If all holes are filled and he has another down year, Miami will most likely be searching for another young QB to try to become the next Peyton Manning or Cam Newton. But, if he does make those strides, Miami will have it’s the best shot at reaching a championship since Dan Marino.
