Tannehill ‘Back To The Future’ Film Review: Week 1, 2016

It’s been a while since Tannehill threw a pass… time to go over 2016 with a fine-tooth comb

Tannehill has both critics and supporters, but what does the film say?

Tannehill has both critics and supporters, but what does the film say?

There’s little doubt, love ’em, hate ’em, or lukewarm: Ryan Tannehill is THE most crucial piece of the puzzle to Miami’s 2018 Season.

A lot has changed since 2016, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that Tannehill is THE most polarizing Dolphins player. But this season will shift the Tannehill needle forever into one camp or the other.

Let’s watch some film of 2016: Back To The Future

Back in September of 2016, after Week 1, I wrote this:

I love football and the Miami Dolphins. I’ve learned one thing over the years as a fan of both: My emotions are a turbulent sea that can thrust me into the waters of incorrect observation and opinion, but film, film never does.

Miami lost this week in a heart ripping, nail-biter. And even though Tannehill drove the team down for the go-ahead score, the chants of his failure grew ever louder.

Ryan Tannehill has lovers and haters – not many are placing bets on middle ground.

After a bit of banter with a knowledgeable, but willful reader Lemmus, I decided to chain myself to mast and set sail, head on into this stormy debate.

Quality QB play is the most crucial aspect ot the success of the 2018 Season

Personally, I’m one of those few on the fence with Tannehill’s play. I stride the Middle Passage of ‘he’s not nearly as bad as the haters say’ and ‘he hasn’t demonstrated nearly enough of what his lovers profess’.

But, with this critical juncture in Tannehill’s career in Miami at hand, I decided to rely on my maxim, “Film never lies – ever.

Now, tape can mislead. You can throw a few tapes on and think you’re watching a Hall Of Famer. A lot of film is needed to verify a career trajectory – I’m not attempting that here. But, you only need one “tape” to verify what happened in a single game.

And that, in my humble effort, I have attempted to do.

All Fin Fans want Tannehill to do well. But, if Miami is wrong on this one, then they will be stuck with an albatross to drag them down to Davy Jones’ Locker…”

“…take the “tape” as gospel and portions of my opinion as a foggy nether-land between truth and opinion. In short, some of the evaluations are my two-cents, and I look forward to hearing yours.”

Here’s the film study of Week 1 made back in 2016

(Don’t expect John Gruden here… but I did my best)

Emotions can affect memory, but emotions don’t ‘do jack’ to the Film

Not much has changed since 2016 in regards to Tannehill: I still feel the same (on the fence, but see the potential). Most fans haven’t changed their positions either. For better or worse, the pay per head reviews like AcePerHead.com are betting this season will solidify his perception. He has the Offensive Line now. There’s been plenty of time to learn the system. And #17 now has a shelf full of TE’s, smart WR’s, and RB’s that pass block.

There are no excuses left… if he stays healthy.

The ball is squarely in Tannehill’s court. He will be given full opportunity to knock it out of the park. The million dollar question is, will he?

Phinsnews will put out a film study once per week of every game Tannehill played in 2016. This will refresh our memory with clearer remembrance. It will also help us get a better handle on how Tannehill, the offense… and the season with it will play out. Hope you enjoy.

    Admin and Fans!

My next questioned is some elite Running Backs performed better without a Fullback or another running back in the back field. And most Backs benefit from the additional blocker? How will the Dolphins play Gore, Drake and Ballard? Maybe the 3 will play well together or maybe in the other’s Way!

Here’s An example of one Elite running back who gets a different coach “(The Coach intent was Great)” But throws in a fullback in the backfield. Which it drops his numbers to 60 to 50 yards a game until Barry Father complaint the Coach was not playing his son to his strengths. The coach took the fullback out of the backfield and Barry numbers were back up. What was happening was the Lions offensive line wasn’t that good and Barry needed room for redirecting his get away route’s and the Fullback most of the time was in Barry’s way. One more questioned during Barry’s 10 years with the Lions who were the Quarterbacks? Barry was selling the Tickets and getting them prime time games i.e Thanksgiving Day Games.

Gase had some nice plays on GL with Williams and Drake in the backfield… those RB dives were nice. I think you’ll see heap more of H-back if Smythe… but I can see Drake an Gore with Drake motioning out wide.

Just an observation I would predict that the Dolphins will benefit more from Smythe this season and year after, Gesicki is very talented but one dimensional. Smythe is more versatile in where you can line him up, dependable blocker, used to be a receiver in high school so he would have good hands. He’s more less does what he is asked to do, and once again he earns his playing time and not given. Admin can we say we will see a two tight end formation mostly? Surely Tannehill will have more weapons at his arsenal.

Most are 1st season Rookies playing against Seattle. The Dolphins are full of excuses when it comes down to this quarterback position and continually keep a crisis at that position each season with a good excuse.

1st season Rookie Quarterbacks who has played Seattle.

    On the Patriots:
Belichick has lost five times to still-wet-behind-the-ears quarterbacks is a little stunning. Making it even more stunning is that the list of rookies who have found a way to beat Belichick and the Patriots includes the likes of Geno Smith, Mark Sanchez, and Colt McCoy (yes, the Browns once actually beat the Patriots). The others are Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson. Rookie quarterbacks are 0-8 against Belichick’s Patriots at New England.

Ol plays the greatest component to stability and consistency. The year Roths won the SB his OL was amazing and they could bash away with the RB and the D would keep them close. Miami’s D has sucked, but not nearly as bad as their OL. Yes, the PB has been pretty good, but a 1 dimensional O is a huge liability. Tannehill isn’t an elite QB who can throw you to wins ( no duh huh). The Ol improvement is the main cause for hope going into 2018… if it flops = disaster again. If the OL = good + (15-10 range) very good things will happen. Sitton must stay healthy.

    Super story:
Bradshaw got beat out by Gilliam in the 1974 preseason. Gilliam led the Steelers to a 4-1-1 start but was benched by Chuck Knoll for ignoring the run-first game plan. Bradshaw, who some felt was being punished for participating in a players’ strike during training camp, returned and won the next two games but was benched again after a loss to Cincinnati, this time for Terry Hanratty, who went 2-for-15 the next week against Cleveland, so Bradshaw was back.

My point is Super Bowl winning Coaches are just that!”AND” Supper Bowl Winning Quarterbacks are just that!
If you asked Bradshaw was Coach Knoll a quarterback whisperer are was he the Coach? He would say he was the Coach and he had no problem hurting his feeling, pride etc. if he was not performing. This competition developed one of the best Quarterbacks n the Game with Bradshaw.

The Dolphins on the other hand are spine less when it comes down to making proper quarterback decisions. Matt Moore was a fan favorite with the Dolphins as he was the team’s backup quarterback from 2011-17. But clearly head coach Adam Gase never display the most confidence in Moore, signing Brock Osweiler, who worked with Gase when both were with the Broncos. They also re-signed David Fales, who was brought back last October after the team waived him after the preseason. And also they claimed Bryce Petty off waivers from the Jets. Means that we have a quarterback Crisis arising and the Dolphins have their heads in the sand the last 5 years. This team is rebuilding.

There was a posting by Sports writer Alain Poupart in 2015 listed below.

The Dolphins made a significant investment in quarterback Ryan Tannehill when they signed him Monday to a new contract through the 2020 season.

Some of the following numbers might explain the team’s faith in its 2012 first-round pick.

    • Tannehill has improved every season, with his passer rating going from 76.1 as a rookie in 2012 to 81.7 and to 92.8 in 2014. He’s one of only four quarterbacks in the NFL whose passer rating improved each of the past three seasons. The others are Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions, Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts and Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys.

    As a Fan:
Nothing wrong with that signing. What is wrong?
    1. Blindly assuming Performance or injury would not happen.
    2. Blatantly ignoring talented young Rookie Quarterbacks in the last 5 NFL drafts.

I agree Miami has neglected the QB position. But most teams would be up a creek without a paddle if their starting QB went down. So, I do believe Thill will shine if his cast steps up… but Miami must build the position with quality investments… unless Gase reclaims his QB Guru status.
