Tannehill ‘Back To The Future’ Film Review: Week 1, 2016

It’s been a while since Tannehill threw a pass… time to go over 2016 with a fine-tooth comb

Tannehill has both critics and supporters, but what does the film say?

There’s little doubt, love ’em, hate ’em, or lukewarm: Ryan Tannehill is THE most crucial piece of the puzzle to Miami’s 2018 Season.

A lot has changed since 2016, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that Tannehill is THE most polarizing Dolphins player. But this season will shift the Tannehill needle forever into one camp or the other.

Let’s watch some film of 2016: Back To The Future

Back in September of 2016, after Week 1, I wrote this:

I love football and the Miami Dolphins. I’ve learned one thing over the years as a fan of both: My emotions are a turbulent sea that can thrust me into the waters of incorrect observation and opinion, but film, film never does.

Miami lost this week in a heart ripping, nail-biter. And even though Tannehill drove the team down for the go-ahead score, the chants of his failure grew ever louder.

Ryan Tannehill has lovers and haters – not many are placing bets on middle ground.

After a bit of banter with a knowledgeable, but willful reader Lemmus, I decided to chain myself to mast and set sail, head on into this stormy debate.

Quality QB play is the most crucial aspect ot the success of the 2018 Season

Personally, I’m one of those few on the fence with Tannehill’s play. I stride the Middle Passage of ‘he’s not nearly as bad as the haters say’ and ‘he hasn’t demonstrated nearly enough of what his lovers profess’.

But, with this critical juncture in Tannehill’s career in Miami at hand, I decided to rely on my maxim, “Film never lies – ever.

Now, tape can mislead. You can throw a few tapes on and think you’re watching a Hall Of Famer. A lot of film is needed to verify a career trajectory – I’m not attempting that here. But, you only need one “tape” to verify what happened in a single game.

And that, in my humble effort, I have attempted to do.

All Fin Fans want Tannehill to do well. But, if Miami is wrong on this one, then they will be stuck with an albatross to drag them down to Davy Jones’ Locker…”

“…take the “tape” as gospel and portions of my opinion as a foggy nether-land between truth and opinion. In short, some of the evaluations are my two-cents, and I look forward to hearing yours.”

Here’s the film study of Week 1 made back in 2016

(Don’t expect John Gruden here… but I did my best)

Emotions can affect memory, but emotions don’t ‘do jack’ to the Film

Not much has changed since 2016 in regards to Tannehill: I still feel the same (on the fence, but see the potential). Most fans haven’t changed their positions either. For better or worse, the pay per head reviews like AcePerHead.com are betting this season will solidify his perception. He has the Offensive Line now. There’s been plenty of time to learn the system. And #17 now has a shelf full of TE’s, smart WR’s, and RB’s that pass block.

There are no excuses left… if he stays healthy.

The ball is squarely in Tannehill’s court. He will be given full opportunity to knock it out of the park. The million dollar question is, will he?

Phinsnews will put out a film study once per week of every game Tannehill played in 2016. This will refresh our memory with clearer remembrance. It will also help us get a better handle on how Tannehill, the offense… and the season with it will play out. Hope you enjoy.
