Tannenbaum A ‘Suh-nami Or Tropical Depression’?

By now the combustible quote, or misquote if you will, is all over the airwaves:

Tannenbaum said at a recent conference. “He hasn’t played as well as we hoped, we haven’t played as well as we hoped. But again, I think we have to give it a grade of incomplete.”

Hype has faded into hate for many of the Miami faithful about their coveted free-agent acquisition of Ndamukong Suh. Mind-blowing expectations in the offseason on his impact come game time has had a sickening effect in contrast with his seeming ineffectiveness. But, what is the truth? Is it boom or bust for Miami’s biggest addition in years? Honestly, there is a more important question, is the man who hired him to help or a hindrance to Miami’s future?

Tannenbaum helmed the collapse of the New York Jets and was cast adrift for his failings. He was washed up on the shores of Miami to bring cohesion to Philbin’s idle regime. So far he is 0 – 2. He was quoted as saying, “I supported Joe Philbin, wish things had worked out.” As the reigning Gm (with Hickey his seeming subordinate) it was his decision to keep Philbin. Owner Stephen Ross said, ‘Now it seems like the right thing to have done‘, in regards to firing Philbin. NOW! Tannenbaum’s “support” was likely a heavy factor in Ross’s decision and it should be asked if Philbin was a bad idea and so was Suh then what does that say about Miami going forward with him at the helm?

Now, I believe Suh will shine brightly given the proper scheme to show off his ability – 60 million guaranteed brightly, we will see. But, again this goes back to Tannenbaum who has said in the past that he isn’t first and foremost a ‘football expert’. How did he not know of the players’ distaste for all the top coaches? How did he not understand that you are splurging on a massive contract and that THE player was going to be used incorrectly? Where were the acumen and foresight needed to guide this team to a championship? Philbin, Coyle, and to a lesser extent Lazor’s shortcomings were all obvious to most who watched 16 games and not just the best pay per head reviews. Yes, we hoped talent and another season of maturation would turn the tide, but the friction between Coyle and Lazor and the players, and the total apathy towards Philbin must have been deafening to any with an intimate knowledge of the locker room. How did Tannenbaum not see it?

Imagine if Philbin had been canned in the off-season what opportunities would have been present? This is why this Sunday could be bittersweet. If Campbell, through a herculean effort, manages to turn this season around, the victory will only serve to solidify Tannenbaum’s position. This is the depth of Miami’s problem. Even if we finally find our coach and resolve all our player issues this season, we will still have a man at the helm who isn’t in touch with his team or the foresight to fix it.

    Tannebaum has derailed the team
We did not need to spend ,114 millón ok Suh
    We needed to sign Mathis.
We need another guard to also replace Dallas Thomas
We needed a middle linebacker since last year and he did not even address that in the off season
Big lack of seeing the big picture
    Fire Tannebaum
We are not going anywhere till that happens
He will continue to make horrible decisions

The Tannebaum signing was just stupid. Suh signing I can understand although I disagree. The whole inference was that w Suh our run defense would be upgraded and he would make everyone better. Wrong. It was the scheme and the coaching that plagued our D.

Typical for a coach to complain to his GM that he needs better players. Psst..hey…how about better coaching eh?

Fans also got drunk on the Suh koolaid. A DT is a DT, not a position that scores TD’s or directly impacts the outcome of the games. I mean, what did Detroit ever do?

Agree, Coaches and Tannebaum signing were a big mistake. As far a Suh, Detroit made the playoffs the last several years w/Suh, what are they doing this year, lottery pick! It is about the scheme, and if you are going to pay the BIG bucks for a player that succeed playing a certain style, you better believe I would know that the coaches are going to use him accordingly. Not Tannebaum!

I don’t and never understood the Tannebaum signing??? If Mr. Ross did not totally trust Mr. Hickey why did he hire him in the first place? Tannebaum is a “I” guy, the reason he was run from the Jets. Should Coach Campbell right the ship and remain, Tannebaum will claim he was the reason for the success. This organization does not need 2 GMs. I liked what Hickey had accomplished up to the Tannebum hire. I just don’t understand Ross, better yet I’m not sure Ross understands. Like his desire and passion, but thats where it ends.

You are right Jimmy, how can you invest so much $ and jeopardize crippling this organization’s future and not know what the plans for the said (Suh) player is? Irresponsible or inept. If this were one of Ross’s business firms, said manager would be let go immediately. Why can’t we have a normal running organization, probably not going to happen till Ross sells or gets a big name coach who has ALL the responsibilities.
