The 3 McCains
Last year the the Dolphins had two Williams on the training camp roster, but only Damien Williams the running back made the team. This year the last name du jour is McCain, however this time it looks like all the McCains are not only going to make the 53 man roster, but they are going to make an impact. The trio includes cornerbacks, Brice and Bobby McCain, and outside linebacker Chris McCain.
It is very amazing that the Dolphins, or any team has three players on their roster that have the same last name, and even more amazing that they could all be contributors. Of the bunch most football gambling fans would say that Brice McCain, the 6 year veteran from Pittsburgh is going to have the biggest impact on the team. He is a feisty cornerback that brings a lot of toughness and scrappy play to the defense, and has a nose for the ball, which is evident from his 3 interceptions last season. Originally football gambling fans expected him to be the Dolphins starting nickel cornerback this season, however he has played so well in camp, that the coaches have began to predominately play him as the starting outside cornerback opposite of Brent Grimes. The Dolphins were originally expecting Jamar Taylor to claim that spot, however Brice has been playing too well to bypass, and I am all for playing the best player available.
With Brice moving to the outside this is actually opening the door for the Dolphins 5th round pick Bobby McCain to compete for the starting Nickel position. Bobby was kind of an under the radar pick that was not really spoken about that much, because of the Dolphins other big name picks of Parker, Phillips and Ajayi. However, Bobby was a play making ball hawk at Memphis and he has really begun to shine throughout camp. In addition he was one of the best performers in the Dolphins recent scrimmage with 1 terrific interception and 2 passes deflected. He clearly looks like he belongs, and if he can keep it up there is a strong possibility that he will earn the starting Nickel position. If the two McCains, and Grimes can continue to play well, than the cornerback position, which was initially thought to be a weakness on the team, can actually have the chance to be very effective and be a very disruptive position in causing turnovers.
Lastly Chris McCain has continued to improve from his undrafted rookie season, and he is battling for the starting strong side outside linebacker position. Whether he starts or not is going to mainly depend on whether the coaches decide to play Sheppard or Misi at the middle linebacker position. Sheppard is a pure middle linebacker and he has been playing well, and as a result the coaches are giving him every opportunity to replace Misi as the starting middle linebacker. If Sheppard wins the job, than that means the Dolphins will move Misi back to his more natural outside linebacker position, and thus put Chris as a backup. However, regardless if Chris starts or not, he has shown enough talent to garner playing time, especially has a pass rushing specialist.
I am excited to see these McCains in action, and believe they can make an impact on our defense. What does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans think about these three players with the same last name?
