The Dolphins Locked Up Alonso, What about Landry?

When will Jarvis Landry future get locked up?

The Miami Dolphins announced yesterday that they have locked up LB Kiko Alonso on a 4 year $29 million deal. He was originally given a $3.9 million restricted tender when free agency began, in order to give both sides more time to hammer out the details on a long term contract. So as a result the Dolphins added another $25 million and 3 years to the restricted tender in order to keep Alonso under contract in Miami through 2020.

Most free bookie software fans would agree that the Dolphins definitely put their money where their mouth is this off season by paying their own productive players. The list of players that received contract extensions this season includes Wake, Stills, Branch, Jones, Alonso, which means Landry is next on deck. This is a nice change from what the Dolphins have done in the past of letting their free agents leave, and then over pay for another team’s free agents. This approach of rewarding your own speaks volumes to the rest of the locker room and should help motivate the rest of the team and get more out of them. This type of action sends a powerful message: if you play well and work hard then you will get rewarded in Miami.

However, just to play a little devil’s advocate, the negative side effect of giving out a bunch of large extensions is that they run the risk of some players getting complacent now that they got paid. It will be something to watch to see if these players lose their motivation.

The driving force of the offense needs to get locked up this year.

Unfortunately, this is a common theme around the NFL where players have big seasons during a contract year, and then after they get a large long term deal, their performance takes a dip the next season. The other negative part of signing someone to a long term deal is that if they get injured then the organization is still on the hook for any guaranteed money.

So even though there is some risks with rewarding players by giving them long term deals, the overall benefits of having satisfied players and the rest of the team being shown that you will be rewarded for hard work and good play far outweighs the risks. This also helps with Miami’s goal of creating this new winning culture in South Florida. Also the rest of the players around the league see this as well, and when it’s time for them to hit free agency they will give a little extra thought to Miami, because they know that we reward our own when its time.

But, what about Jarvis Landry? What is he thinking? And what is Miami’s end game? They are running out of cash, but of course there are always ways of moving money around to get the deal done, so… when will it get done?

There is very much upside to the Dolphins.

I’m looking forward to this season… a few key things need to keep afloat and 2-3 pieces need to be added, but overall I excited.

…imnsho, we overpaid Branch and Alonzo in both base and guarantees …that’s squeezing the Brown and Landry deals …at 7.5 mil, Alonzo sets the bottom for Brown, who should have been in the 4-6 mil range …and Landry has every right to expect 12-15 mil …which he will get either here or next year elsewhere …they can however, backload his deal to ease the cap hit this year but he’ll want a high guarantee as the trade-off

…agree with Miami holding on to its own FAs although I think we definitely could have found better than Branch for the deal he got.

…still holding my breath hoping they can reel Brown in

Thing with Branch its a 2 year deal. They pay a little bit more and it buys time to get another player in unless he really blossoms. I think unless he or Alonso get seriously hurt or their play drops, the deals are fine. DE are expensive and would likely want a ling term deal… we’ll see though.

…Branch is a 3 year deal at 27 mil with 16.8 mil GUARANTEED! …he was brought in as a replacement player and proved “serviceable” when Williams failed …its structured to pay him 10 mil in 2017 but with only a 5 mil cap hit …the only other DE in the NFL getting that kind of contract is Wake …and because of the way its structured, if Branch doesn’t play at his price level, they are stuck paying him the full guarantee …there were plenty of FA DEs on the market with similar stats at MUCH cheaper prices …ala Hayes …they way overpaid imnsho …I pray he proves me wrong

I think Lemmus they needed to lock down a pass rusher and the premium on one was high… they likely figured we know this guy, he knows our system, we can over pay a bit 1-2 mill and lock him in for 2 years… yes it’s a 3 yr contract, but he can be cut after 2 with little penalty. They have too many holes and they are cementing players in the short term till they can get replacements. If they didnt bring him back they would have had to draft a DE… 2 actually and 1 high, or pay big for an unknown and it would have been long term commitment. This way they filled a 2 year gap with a young known and can draft a DE early or maybe not if better value falls to them. Least, that’s the way I see it. Hayes fills a specific goal and it’s one year… good signing, but next year they’ll be in the same situation. They will get a DE this year and next year likely…then Hayes will be gone and in 2019, o will branch, unless he steps up… which I don’t discount.

I was happy with the FO except for not getting a stud guard. Then they let Brown leave without a contract and turn around and keep Misi. They have Hewitt and Hull for backups already on the cheap. I know they cut Misi’s pay but to me he is just a waste. Can’t stay healthy and isn’t very good when he is. Brown would have turned a big weakness into a strength. Still shocked they kept him

    • admin

Not a big fan of the Misi deal, but the Brown thing isn’t dead Samson… he wants around 10 mill, which Miami doesn’t want to swallow. He switched to a Florida agent, so he may come back around.

      • Frantz

I think the main problem with Brown is character, let’s dont forget that when someone come with a visit its not only about money but also is big check into the player’s motivations, attitude, ego …. After all until now hes a one year wonder. On paper Brown was a better player that Timmons last year , and younger , but no one of us have talked with them both .

      • Dunner

Admin, I’m thinking that Tannebaum and company has their sights set on one impact FA; either Brown or Johnathan Hankins. I believe if they are going to pay one of the positions that it will be DT (Hankins). Just what it seems to be imo. There should be a LBer there at 22 that should be able to step in day 1 opposed to a DT.

        • Lemmus

…good god gerty, Dunner …Hankins? …just how many DTs do you want?

…we’re already loaded at the position and the DL is eating up so much cap we can’t afford a decent FA G, Brown, or extend Landry as it is.

…I grant he would be a nice addition but at what cost elsewhere?

…methinks you have wet dreams about DTs 🙂

          • admin

I wouldn’t say loaded with only 2 DT’s and one who struggles beyond part time work….but, I do agree on Landry…Brown isn’t a sure fire hit or he would have been picked up already.

          • Lemmus

            …you’re not counting Hayes

…Hayes can play DT and DE and could start/bu at either depending on how Branch and Phillips perform in camp …he has played well at both in the past …he was traded because of his 15.7 mil cap hit, not because he wasn’t still starting material …and I’m betting he will outplay his new contract because he will now be a FA again next year and wants to get one last decent payday

…as bad as the Branch deal is, the Hayes deal is a steal on paper …as always, we’ll see what happens in camp

          • Dunner

I agree to a point Lemmus. I’m not saying we need a DT, I’m just trying to figure their thinking. Brown seems like a natural pick up if the $ can be agreed upon, so they must be considering a different move???? I wouldn’t mind either or, but if we pass on Brown I think that tells us that a LBer is coming with the 22nd pick, where as a DT won’t be taken at 22 regardless.

          • admin

Hayes maybe is a DE on pass rush downs–maybe, but at 278 or something, he’ll get destroyed on run downs, so I’ll disagree with you there, sir.

        • admin

Brown is close he has dropped his expectation but Miami is only slightly budging…they are playing hard ball. I like it.

          • admin

Brown came back for a second visit, so it’s between Raiders and Miami and Miami’s tax system give them the edge.
