When will Jarvis Landry future get locked up?
The Miami Dolphins announced yesterday that they have locked up LB Kiko Alonso on a 4 year $29 million deal. He was originally given a $3.9 million restricted tender when free agency began, in order to give both sides more time to hammer out the details on a long term contract. So as a result the Dolphins added another $25 million and 3 years to the restricted tender in order to keep Alonso under contract in Miami through 2020.
Most free bookie software fans would agree that the Dolphins definitely put their money where their mouth is this off season by paying their own productive players. The list of players that received contract extensions this season includes Wake, Stills, Branch, Jones, Alonso, which means Landry is next on deck. This is a nice change from what the Dolphins have done in the past of letting their free agents leave, and then over pay for another team’s free agents. This approach of rewarding your own speaks volumes to the rest of the locker room and should help motivate the rest of the team and get more out of them. This type of action sends a powerful message: if you play well and work hard then you will get rewarded in Miami.
However, just to play a little devil’s advocate, the negative side effect of giving out a bunch of large extensions is that they run the risk of some players getting complacent now that they got paid. It will be something to watch to see if these players lose their motivation.
The driving force of the offense needs to get locked up this year.
Unfortunately, this is a common theme around the NFL where players have big seasons during a contract year, and then after they get a large long term deal, their performance takes a dip the next season. The other negative part of signing someone to a long term deal is that if they get injured then the organization is still on the hook for any guaranteed money.
So even though there is some risks with rewarding players by giving them long term deals, the overall benefits of having satisfied players and the rest of the team being shown that you will be rewarded for hard work and good play far outweighs the risks. This also helps with Miami’s goal of creating this new winning culture in South Florida. Also the rest of the players around the league see this as well, and when it’s time for them to hit free agency they will give a little extra thought to Miami, because they know that we reward our own when its time.
But, what about Jarvis Landry? What is he thinking? And what is Miami’s end game? They are running out of cash, but of course there are always ways of moving money around to get the deal done, so… when will it get done?
