The Positives and Negatives of Philbin’s Return

The Dolphins were able to win an exciting, yet meaningless game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, with the help of a blocked punt that turned into a safety. Regardless that the Dolphins were eliminated from making the playoffs yesterday due to the Steelers’ victory, it is still always nice to see the team win. There were times when they did not look that good, however Tannehill was able to put together his first 4 touchdown performance and multiple long second half touchdown drives. It was a full team effort with many players, like Clay, Wallace, Miller, Wake, Jones, and Landry making big impact plays during the game.

However, the biggest news of the day came from Ross, who after the game declared that Joe Philbin will return for a fourth season as the Dolphins’ head coach. Ross said that he can feel that this team is heading in the right direction and that he is willing to be patient for another season, but he expects big things next year, which would definitely mean that next season will without a doubt be a playoff or bust season. I am sure there are a lot of mixed emotions and mixed views about this decision, so lets try to look at it as non-biased as possible.

The negative reason of having Philbin back is that excluding the last game against the Jets, Philbin has a 3 year record of 23-24, not a record that makes the best bookie software sites like www.AcePerHead.com want to bet on the Dolphins to win the Super Bowl next year. Another negative is that he often has a moment in each game, where you scratch your head and wonder what the f*ck was he thinking. Or times where you wish he had a bit more balls and went for it on 4th and short, instead of kicking long field goals with Sturgis, even though everyone knows it is similar to playing Russian roulette. He has also had issues motivating his team to play up to their potential in the all-important month of December. Lastly he has also had an issue with his team being unable to close out close games.

The positives of having Philbin back is that the problem with most sub par teams is that they are constantly rebuilding with each new coaching staff every three years. It is very tough to clean house and then in the first year to be successful, because there are new coaches, new game plans and new players all coming together, which leads to lots of early growing pains. One thing that the best teams in the league have in common, is that they have retained their head coach for many years, (Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, Broncos, Packers, and Seahawks) With Philbin already knowing that he is returning this team will pretty much have the same schemes, coaches and players as this season, so there will be no learning curve to hurdle over. Hickey and Philbin did a very good job in the last draft and free agency period, so one would hope that with another year under their belt together, and less holes to fill, that they should be able to do a similarly good job in finding football players that can improve this team. Philbin has improved as a coach during his three years in Miami, and he should be able to improve and build from his experience as a head coach going into his fourth season.

I am sure there is a going to be a big divide over people’s opinions of having Philbin back for a fourth season. However, whether it is the right or the wrong decision, only time will be able to tell, and only Ross had the power to make it, which means it is entirely out of the fans’ hands. So all we can do is to continue to cheer and support our beloved Miami Dolphins, and hope that this was the right decision, that will lead the Dolphins to the promised land of the playoffs next season.

I’m not a football coach, don’t play one on TV, but have been a fan for fifty plus years. Is it Philbin making the poor decisions on clock management, players kept in while doing poorly, players taken out when doing well? If so, then yeh not a fan. If it’s one of his OC, DC coaches then something needs to change. Thanks for you great articles. Nevada Phin Fan

Thanks for your support, and hopefully Miami can have another successful off-season in free-agency and the draft, to help fill some holes on the team

Its the wrong decision…that is of course if you wish to build a SB team. Philbin is to HC what a “game manager” is to QB’s. They just don’t have talent to win in and of themselves.

Ross is stupid in football and has a track record of poor hiring decisions…see the turnover in roster and his coaching hires since he purchased the team.

The stadium will reflect the fans feelings on keeping Philbin. Watch how empty the stadium will be vs Jets and next year.

Its Ross’ money so he can do anything he wants. He’s will not however see a single dollar from me.
