This Year or Next, Reshad Jones Is Moving On…

Reshad Jones is nearing the end of his time with Miami

Reshad Jones has been a force for the Miami Dolphins over the past 9 seasons. He is one of the best 5th Round draft picks this organization has ever made. Jones has had a stellar career with 2 Pro Bowls and 2017 is regarded as one of the best seasons playmaking safety has had in NFL history.

With all that being said, Miami paid Jones handsomely for his services…

… and he is the only player not showing up to OTAs.

Normally this isn’t a big deal… even with a new regime being installed. But Jones had an incident last season where he quit on the team during a game. This decision combined with Jones’ age, being a no show so far, AND a new staff all point to the exit door. One way or the other, Jones isn’t long for the Miami Dolphins.

Jones is likely in his last season with Miami

This move will most likely come next year when his contract has a smaller payout and is much more palatable to other teams. But it could even be this year… if the Dolphins will eat the money. Jones has trade value, so it will be interesting to see how the Dolphins respond.

OTAs being missed were one thing. M.J. wrote a blistering response to Jones’ absence, but I took a more even-keeled approach. Now after missing near 2 weeks of voluntary camp, my tune has changed. Yes, it’s voluntary. You can voluntarily come to help your team or not.

Howard had knee surgery. Grant foot surgery. Vincent is recovering from a bum foot as well and Kilgore a torn tricep. All showed up.

A pre-June 1st release would count as $25 million in dead cap money. Given Miami would then be at negative -$8 million in the Cap, this scenario ISN’t happening. Miami would rather have his talent for the season than nada in return… and be broke in 2019. Then there’s a post-June 1st release scenario where the dead cap money would count as $17 million in 2019 and $8 million in 2020 and a cap savings of negative -100k. This is another useless option and not happening.

Reshad Jones will be on the roster in 2019… unless a miracle trade emerges

Now, a pre-June 1st trade would count as $12 million in dead cap money and net the team savings of $5 million and whatever compensation would be gained from a trade.  This is far more palatable… but likely a long shot as well. Lastly, there could be a post-June 1st trade that would have Miami take a dead cap hit of $4 million in 2019 and a dead cap hit of $8 million in 2020 and a 2019 cap savings of $13 million. Given the amount of money Miami has under the Cap next year, this the most likely of scenarios that have Jones moving on in 2019.

This is the only way I could see (or would want) Miami moving on from Jones this season.

I know some fans are very unhappy with Jones, but Miami would be crazy to just release Jones. The cost is way too high. They are better off having him play this season.  The only option for a divorce this year is a trade.

Sure all the best football software providers like Ace Pay Per Head, agree a post-June 1st trade is financially better than a pre-June 1st trade. However, any trade is based on Miami willing to eat some of Jones’ contract and finding a trade partner.

All of this talk depends on IF Miami is really unhappy with Jones and wants to move on. This isn’t a certainty.

While Fans might be unhappy with Reshad Jones, the Phins brass might not

Remember, while it looks and sounds like Flores is unhappy with the situation, and many fans aren’t thrilled either, this could be a ‘nothing burger’. I don’t believe it is… but it could be especially if Flores is trying to avoid the ‘tank’. Happy with Jones or not, he still has an impact on the field.

I’ve been a big fan of Jones’ game. He has always been a playmaker for us. However, if a playoff caliber team that has $15 million plus of Cap space such as the Colts, Texans, Browns, Eagles, Bears, and Chiefs want to trade for Jones and offer something good… go for it. Jones would be a nice boost to the back end of those team’s defenses. But if not, use him this year to pick up some wins and move on next year.

This is a new era of moving away from the dysfunctionality of the past. If that means moving on from Jones to get it done, then make it so. When Jones quit on the team last year, I quit on my loyalty to him. The Miami Dolphins franchise is way bigger than Reshad Jones is.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about possibly trading Jones?
