The Dolphins Three Wise-Men?
It will be very quickly apparent if they were Wise-Men or something other.
So, it will soon be time to find out if the Dolphins three Wise-Men of the 2016 Draft were indeed wise, or otherwise.
The Draft is in the books, and too say that it was wildly entertaining would be an understatement.
I will state that it was a slow grow, but I love what Miami did during the draft.
Due to a bizarre draft day twitter hack, the Dolphins Laremy Tunsil will either go down as legendary or in infamy. Personally, I do not think he will smoke his way into trouble, and instead, he will be extra determined to prove he is an elite talent. Ultimately, I am confident that it will be proven that a gas mask, smoke out video, will have landed Miami, what many pay per head bookie fans were predicting, one of the top players of the 2016 Draft.
In the second round, the Dolphins traded up and drafted Xavien Howard, who has the proto-typical size that Vance Joseph is looking for in his Cornerbacks. Miami was so confident in their pick, that they had no problem trading away Jamar Taylor later in the draft and sacrificed a 4th round pick in-order to get him. I have no issue with them trading away a player who has failed to bite or even nibble in his three years in the league.
Did one of the three Wise-Men, Adam Gase, help “steal” the Bears pick with the trade up?
It was the use of the 4th rounder and the failed prognostication of a CB run that brought a bit of an uproar. But, one thing that isn’t mentioned is that Miami jumped Chicago in their acquisition of Howard and that the Bears, who run the same press-zone defense as Miami, traded out of their spot soon after. Did Gase’s knowledge and instinct about his former HC and team “steal” the player they planned to pick? Doubt the truth will ever be known, but it seems more than coincidental.
In the third round the Dolphins filled another huge need by drafting Alabama’s second string running back Kenyan Drake. Truthfully there were quite a few other running backs that I would have preferred over Drake, however, there is no denying Drake’s explosive talent and his ability to be a compliment to Ajayi. This would be a major feather in the Wise-Men’s cap if they nail this one, because like me, most of the experts had their mouth drop at the call from the podium.
The biggest knock on Drake is that he has a lengthy injury history, and becoming a running back in the NFL probably is not going to change that trend. He has terrific feet with a second gear burst, as well as extremely shifty and elusive – although some might say too shifty. In addition, he is very effective in the passing game, a very good kick off returner, and special teams player. He should immediately be the second best running back on our roster, even though that is not saying much at this moment. I still expect Miami to sign one more free agent running back such as Arian Foster or Joique Bell.
In the end, this is just the first half of the draft, and Miami could very well have two starters and one large contributor. If this ends up the case then it will go along way in making Gase, Grier, and Tannenbaum three Wise-Men and not the three stooges. Go Fins!!!
They and Gase sure did take the Bears desired pick in the second round. In the first round the Bears traded up in front of the Giants, which everyone expected them to take a CB. Not the case, they took a LBer, which later we find out was going to the player the G-Men were going to pick. So the Bears were going to take a CB in the second and the Fins out smarted the Bears.
If you want the player, go get the player. That is exactly what Miami did, got the player, filled a position of need. Nicely done!
Agree…if he is the one then it’s better than having two almost the ones!!! Forgot about the bears moving in front of the Giants!!!
