There is no mystery that Mike Wallace and the Dolphins are having issues coexisting together, however, parting ways is easier said than done because of his huge contract. People inside the organization are telling me that Miami is beginning to shop around the idea of trading Wallace, again this is easier said than done.
First of all the 2015 free agency period begins in less than two weeks, which means there will be plenty of solid receivers hitting the market that will cost money to acquire, but not players or valuable draft picks. So many teams may not want to start trading away valuable assets until after free agency dies down.
The other issue is that every team in the NFL knows that Miami would prefer to trade Wallace, which will diminish the Dolphins’ bargaining power. Also, there will be a buyer beware label on Wallace considering that teams already know he is a diva type receiver and could possibly cause team dynamic problems.
The biggest question for Miami is what do they deem as a fair value for Mike Wallace, a player that scored 10 touchdowns, 67 receptions, and 862 yards, which are still very productive numbers. Most pay per head reviews would say that the Phins will be hoping to get a 2nd round draft pick for him, but that may be a bit too unrealistic. Probably a more fair value would be a 3rd or most likely a 4th round draft pick, which would then mean the Dolphins could possibly be trading Wallace for a player that may not even be able to start in this league.
The other problem is that whoever is going to make a trade for Wallace has to also be prepared to either pay Wallace almost $10 million next year or work out a new cap-friendly contract. Again a lot of teams probably will not want to pay that type of money on a player that is known as a one-trick pony, and a volatile personality.
Personally I believe that the only teams that may consider trading for Wallace are teams that are currently Super Bowl contenders, that need one or two more players to achieve a Super Bowl ring. Two teams that immediately come to mind are the Seattle Seahawks and the Indianapolis Colts. The Seahawks are very thin at wide receiver, and Wilson throws an excellent deep ball so this would be a great match, however, the Seahawks just parted ways with Percy Harvin because of locker room problems so they may not want to take that chance again with a player like Wallace. The Colts have a decent receiving group but Wallace’s speed and Luck’s arm would be a lethal combination and Irsay has no problem trading draft picks for players (Trent Richardson and Vontae Davis).
Do Phins fans think Miami can trade Wallace and get a fair deal? Also what other teams do you think could be possible trading partners with the Phins? Lastly is it worth trading Wallace for only a 4th round pick?
