Gase is crazy about Mayfield… but Miami isn’t moving up to get him
Mayfield may or may not be a star, but unless he falls to #11 he won’t be a Fin
The NFL Draft is just a month away. It’s the time of year where draft wishes, rumors, and smoke screens heat up. One rumor that’s going around is that Miami will trade up to select QB Baker Mayfield. This is music to many Phins fans ears because they desperately want to move on from Ryan Tannehill.
Reports are everywhere about Adam Gase’s man crush on Mayfield. Fact is, they are thoroughly kicking the tires on him… just in case Mayfield drops to #11. However, since the Jets trade up to the #3 spot, there’s a good chance that 3 or 4 QB’s will be gone in the Top 5.
This leaves Miami on the outside looking in.
Personally, I think 4 QB’s will go in the Top 10. The Giants, Broncos, Bills, and Cardinals are all interested in a QB. This makes it unlikely that either Rosen, Allen, Darnold, or Mayfield will make it to an idle Dolphins at #11. I can’t see both the Giants and Broncos passing on a QB as well as the Bills not having enough firepower to outbid the Fins. Then if you add in the Cardinals, who are within striking distance of the #7-10 picks, Miami needs to move up.
I guess it’s possible for Mayfield to fall, but I wouldn’t bet on it with the pay per head sites.
A QB is the most important position in the game… but it’s still a team game
So yes, all this talk of trading up makes sense… if they intend to go for broke on Mayfield.
However, a kamikaze trade up doesn’t make any sense for the vulnerable regime. Giving away that many valuable assets on a crapshoot will go a long way to getting them canned.
Yes, Miami does need a young QB on the roster.
Yup, they should draft one in this upcoming draft…
…But they are financially committed to Ryan Tannehill this year and next.
This regime can’t afford to bomb in 2018. So why sacrifice 3-4 shots at quality players to move up in the draft to get Mayfield? This added talent could save their necks.
Miami needs a Linebacker, Free Safety, Tight End, and DT… and more. The Jets gave up three 2nd Rd Picks to move up three spots. Trading up for the Phins means missing out on key needs in the 1st and 2nd Rd this year. It also means giving up a 1st and /or 2nd next year. And it could take even more than this, depending on how far the move is and how much the Bills are willing to give away.
Miami just doesn’t have the ammo.
I like the potential of Mayfield, but I don’t like the price it would take to trade up
Despite the success of the Eagles trade up to get a QB, these type of moves rarely work out. More often than not, teams that mortgage the future end up regretting it.
I personally like Mayfield and could see him being the pick at #11. But I’m not sold on enough to give away the farm on a player that will ride the bench for a season. While many may be happy to see the staff and Front Office get fired, I still believe there’s hope for this regime. Heck, like our reader Steve keeps preaching, maybe if Mayfield falls he’d be a great chip to get a trade back. It would be nice to see us start collecting extra picks for a change. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about the Dolphins possibly trading up to draft Mayfield or another QB?
