Tua Shows, Ogbah Returns, & Curious Poyer!
It was a busy day with plenty of Phins news as players returned for camp
Miami Dolphins Training Camp practice starts tomorrow, and plenty of news is hitting the wire today. Miami placed some players on the PUP, Emmanual Ogbah returned, Tua showed so he won’t be holding out, and former Bill Jordan Poyer had some odd comments. The good news is that most of the storylines were positive for the Dolphins, although some were curious.
Training Camp kicks off tomorrow!
The first and biggest story was Tua isn’t holding out and teammates don’t think he’ll hold in either. The news that Jordan Love is holding in had many thinking Tua would hold in especially since they have the same agents in Athletes First. While we won’t know officially until tomorrow, I don’t think he will because teammates usually know what is really going on behind the scenes. Also, you can’t say because Love is holding in that Tua will follow suit. Both are in different situations. Love is at the end of the line with his contract because he already gave Green Bay a team-friendly deal and Tua needs to solidify his abilities with an amazing season this year. I see Tua betting on himself this season and he needs every edge to put his best foot forward. Tua showing up on time and working with his teammates only helps his long-term goals. The downside is if Tua does hold his ground and plays on his 5th-year option because he doesn’t get an offer from Miami that he likes, you can bet with the best pay-per-head that things will get dicey better for him and the team for next season.
Time will tell what is what, and tomorrow is a big crossroads in the Tua and Dolphins negotiations.
Ogbah returns to the Dolphins to replace Barrett
When Shaq Barrett retired the Phins were left in a lurch, forcing rookies Muhammed Kamara and Chop Robinson to carry more responsibilities. The Dolphins quickly pulled the trigger on a new edge player bringing Emmanuel Ogbah back for the 2024 Season.
Ogbah wasn’t a perfect fit for the Fangio system, but it’s easy to miss how good of a season he had with Miami last year. In 2023, Ogbah had 20 hurries, 6 sacks, 11 stops, 12 hurries, and 1 pick in 286 snaps. Those are pretty good numbers! If you compare it to his 2021 Season of 755 snaps, 60 hurries, 11 sacks, 37 hurries, and 30 stops, and in his 2020 Season of 792 snaps, 66 pressures, 10 sacks, 44 hurries, and 26 stops, they are very comparable to last year given he had only 40% of the snaps.
Ogbah was a good signing and might become a better contributor than expected at first glance.
Odds and ends in news
Sadly, rookie Tahj Washington was put on I.R. effectively ending his season, and David Long Jr. and Odell Beckham Jr. were placed on the PUP. OBJ and Long will return because their ailments aren’t serious. Still, let’s hope both return sooner rather than later. Overall, these injuries aren’t a disaster.
The odd news was some comments by new Dolphins Jordan Poyer.
“Over the past few years playing against this team, you get a sense that if you get on top of this team, they might fold,” Poyer said.
Poyer all but called the Dolphins mentally soft. Now whether you agree or disagree, why put that out into the public? Nothing good can be had from that type of talk. Most of the ‘mentally soft’ players he’s faced over the years are still here, so if we lose a close game this quote will reappear.
I guess we’ll see if this quote comes back during the season.
Anyway, it’s mostly good news so you can’t complain. Let’s get ready for the big kick-off tomorrow!! Go Phins!!!
