Well, Fitzmagic is getting laid to rest with ‘Tua time’ starting Week 8
Well, that short series Tua had against the Jets was far bigger than most expected. Along with many reports, Tua has confirmed that he is the starter against the L.A. Rams! With Miami 3-3 and only one game out of first place in the division, Week 8 was certainly a crossroads of the 2020 Season. But, now that it’s ‘Tua time’, this game is a crossroads for the franchise.
Whew… I can feel my blood pressure rising already.
Tua starting is certainly a surprise
I try to write these articles objectively but as a Miami Dolphins fan of 42 years, it isn’t easy. Guys like Brian Flores, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Tua Tagovailoa make keeping my emotions in check far more difficult.
Growing up on Shula and Marino I had high-quality football guys and more importantly, high-quality people to root for. They made being a Dolphins fan special. I want to feel that again and I want my children to feel it. This regime has me rooting for their success as much because of who they are as for my own selfish ends.
The storyline I saw and wanted was seeing Fitzmagic take it as far as he could in 2020. And, I wanted Tua to get as much time to acclimate, heal, and have a gelled team around him as possible. Both are kaput.
This is why this curveball has me nervous.
It’s Tua Time now… and my concerns of reinjury will haunt me for the remainder of the season. You saw in his short outing that he has something special. It doesn’t take the best pay per head reviews to see that Tua can play. The question is can this offensive line do a better job though? Right now they are ranked 26th in the NFL. The arrow is certainly pointing up for this unit, but they are still raw.
The reality is this O-line has some warts and most of them have been covered up by Fitzmagic. At least, with time to rest and plan, Flores and Gailey will have a fresh team and can create a master plan.
In Flores we trust, so I trust the call… but, my fingers are crossed
Does Tua give the Dolphins the best chance to win this week? No. The experience differential between Tua and Fitz is tremendous. It offsets their difference in talent, especially over these next couple of weeks. And that’s the thing, these next 3-4 weeks will make or break this season.
Now, we don’t see practice, so Tua could show himself as the better player. But, what if Tua doesn’t perform well because of rookie hiccups? Will it jeopardize Flores’s credo of do what’s best to win now?
Well, the bottom line is if Tua comes out and players even roughly close to Fitzpatrick, everything will be fine. What a big game coming up! Go Tua, go Phins!!!
