Tyreek Hill Trade Talk Finds Life Again!
Draft is approaching & Hill trade talk is back!
Miami Dolphins ultra talented but highly problematic receiver Tyreek Hill has flashed his second ‘peace’ emoji on social media and talk has flared up again of him being traded draft night. Some of the more conservative voices in the Dolphins community have shifted their views of ‘it will never happen to ‘just maybe’. Clearly, moving off Hill and getting good compensation would be amazing for the Phins. We aren’t even close to knocking on post season success, so moving off Hill’s issues and age would be the best play for long term success, despite his talent.
Problem is what would we really get for Hill, and can we afford it?
Hill’s time in Miami is over… this year or next
Tyreek Hill’s talent changes what the Dolphins can do on offense and is the primary driver of their quick strike ability. Without him the Phins offense would need to find a new way of doing business. While moving off Hill this season would severely limit their chances of making the postseason, if they could get a quality player or draft picks, it would certainly help them in the long run.
The real problem is the receiver market has fallen off the last few years and Grier extension of Hill last offseason makes parting ways this offseason almost impossible.
Consider that star receiver and inhuman athlete D.J. Metcalf only fetched 2nd Round pick with some back-end stuff and he’s 27 years old. You can bet with the best pay per head that 32-year-old Hill and all his baggage isn’t getting nearly that much. You are probably looking at a conditional 3rd Round pick and then take on most of the money owed Hill.
Trading Hill is very, very EXPENSIVE
The numbers on moving off Hill this season is staggering. Trading Hill before June 1st would cost the Dolphins $28 million dollar hit on their cap with $55 million in total dead money that would be split up over two seasons. If they trade Hill post June 1st it’s still terrible with $12 million dollar hit on their cap with $40 million in total dead money that would be split up over two seasons.
I just don’t think it’s possible to move off Hill this season.
Next season is the year to move off Hill. Trading Hill pre-June 1st in 2026 will free up $35 million with ‘only’ $15 million in Dead Cap. The problem is that Hill will be 32 years old and likely the value Miami will fetch for him will also be less. Unfortunately, there isn’t really any choice other than keeping Hill this season given the numbers.
So, despite all the ‘trade Hill buzz’, expect hi to be on the roster this season and gone next offseason. Let’s just hope Hill has an amazing year and the Phins can get something good for him… other than ditching his antics, which is a huge addition by subtraction.
