Gore was never flashy like Barry Sander or a speedster like Eric Dickerson. He never had the dominant Offensive Line like Emmit Smith either. What Gore had, and still has, is supreme fortitude and will.

This isn’t to say Gore isn’t physically talented.

He has power, burst, small space agility, and a nice little jump cut. Most NFL running backs would kill to have the physical skill set he has at 35. But his iron discipline and toughness, both physically and mentally, is what makes him special.

Against the #1 Rushing defense that gave up only 65 yards per game, Gore put up 15 carries for 101 yards with 6.7 YPC.

Yes, it was hot and 5 Qts had an effect… and the Dolphins O-line took full advantage. But when you study the film, you see that Gore is playing at a very high level and is still exceptional.

The play below is my favorite play by Gore. It didn’t gain much, but it displays perfectly the will and physical power that Gore has. Ted Larsen and Nick O’Leary are beaten early on their blocks. Notice how Gore responds after the impact.

Yes, O’Leary and Larsen help push the pile, but it’s the raw power and determination to not fold on the impact that begins the drive forward. It was Gore who held it down till the cavalry arrived. A 1-yard run turned into a 5 yard gain… thanks to Gore.

In the film below, Gore gets every last inch out of a run.

Now you have to add the production of the O-line into the equation. Last year the Dolphins and the Colts only gave their runners around a half a yard before contact. This year the Dolphins O-line is giving Gore and Drake much more to work with. Notice how time and time again, #83 O’Leary and #66 Swanson crack the defense open. Once open, Gore tears the defense apart.

Gore is a battering ram breaking the will and bodies of the opposition.

Four and five-yard gains aren’t flashy, but over time they will become chunk gains. If Gore doesn’t use the Cut Technique there’s a big risk the defender gets into the passing lane and changes the trajectory of the pass, disrupts the timing of the play, or gets a deflection.
